Why Micron Stock’s 178% Run Cracked Even as Targets Kept Climbing

MU Stock Price: Year to Date (TIKR)

Micron Technology (MU) stock has climbed 178% since early January, closing at $878 on August 7 even after giving back close to a third of the record high it touched in June. The run traces back to the AI memory supercycle, but the two-week wobble that followed traces to something narrower: a sector-wide reckoning over how much of that run was already priced in.

MU Stock Q3 2026 Earnings in USD (TIKR)

Micron lit the fuse itself on June 24, when fiscal third-quarter revenue hit a record $41.5 billion, up 74% sequentially, alongside an 84.9% gross margin and $25.11 in non-GAAP earnings per share. The bigger news sat underneath those numbers. Micron had signed 16 strategic customer agreements, or SCAs, locking in roughly a fifth of its DRAM volume and a third of its NAND volume through 2030 at contracted floor prices that still generate industry-leading margins.

Chairman and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra addressed the obvious worry, that pricing eventually normalizes, directly on the Q3 earnings call: “the gross margins at the floor will be well beyond the peaks that we experienced, the highs that we experienced in the past cycle, so well beyond those, right?” That is a bet that even a cooling memory market still pays Micron more than any prior cycle did.

The market believed it, for a while. Then came August. A report on August 3 that Chinese rival CXMT is planning a second Beijing DRAM plant knocked Micron shares nearly 4%, reviving the long-run supply-glut fear the SCAs were built to defuse. Three days later, Sandisk and Western Digital both beat revenue estimates and still lost a fifth of their market value in a single session, dragging Micron down as much as 7% intraday on August 6 even though nothing in its own numbers had changed.

That is the tension defining Micron stock right now. The pullback reads like a sector rerating extended AI-memory valuations, not a reversal in the demand or the contracts Micron just spent a quarter locking down.

Wall Street’s Micron Stock Targets Just Made Their Sharpest Jump Yet

Micron stock’s rightmost column tells a stark story: 32 buys, 9 outperforms, 5 holds, 1 underperform and 1 sell among 43 analysts publishing price targets, with the mean target sitting at $1,502. That is 71% above Thursday’s $878 close, the widest premium the Street has carried on Micron stock since TIKR’s table began tracking it.

The trend explains why. Through most of 2026, analysts actually lagged the stock. In February, the mean target of $389 sat 6% below the $416 close. By May, the gap had widened to 27% below, with the $674 mean target trailing a stock already at $924. Then Micron’s June 24 print and its SCA disclosures landed, and analysts reset entirely, pushing the mean target up 123% in three months to $1,502 even as the price itself slipped 5% over the same stretch. Coverage also grew, from 40 targets in May to 43 now. Analysts are not chasing Micron stock’s swings this time. They are pricing in a business they think just got more durable than the chart alone shows.

TIKR Values Micron Stock at $1,387, Still Below the Street’s Number

TIKR’s mid-case model values Micron at $1,387 by August 2030, implying 58% total return from the current price of $878, or 12% annualized over 4.1 years.

That annualized rate sits well below the return implied by the Street’s own $1,502 mean target, making TIKR’s model the more conservative read on how far Micron stock’s SCA-driven margin structure can stretch from here. The gap owes largely to timing. Sell-side targets have already re-rated to price in six years of contracted, floor-protected margins that Mehrotra says will beat any prior cycle peak, while TIKR’s model waits on the Idaho and New York fabs due online in 2027 and 2028 before crediting the business with the full run rate those contracts imply. Both views point the same direction from last week’s pullback. They differ only on how fast Micron stock closes the distance.

TIKR’s model still sees Micron stock reaching $1,387, a 58% total return from here. Explore the full valuation on TIKR for free →
