Key Takeaways

  • Absci rose 12% today, Schrödinger 11% and Recursion 9%, and no company news explains any of the three moves.
  • Schrödinger’s rally has the most business behind it, and Absci’s rally is mostly about investors’ appetite for risk.
  • In the second quarter of 2026, Absci had $0.3 million of revenue and burned $27.6 million of free cash flow. Management says its cash lasts into the second half of 2028.
  • Absci’s third-quarter report on Nov. 12 is the next real test.

Absci (ABSI) shares jumped 12% today. The company’s only news was an 8 a.m. note saying it will attend some upcoming investor conferences.

It had plenty of company. Schrödinger (SDGR) rose 11% and Recursion (RXRX) gained 9%, while Twist Bioscience, Tempus AI and 10x Genomics rose 8% to 10%. The Nasdaq 100 and the small-cap Russell 2000 each rose 1%, so this looks like a risk-on day lifting the whole group.

Same rally, very different businesses

Schrödinger has real revenue to price: $255.9 million in 2025, up 23% from 2024. And even after a big run off February’s lows, its forward price/sales multiple is close to its five-year average.

Today’s jump takes it closer to 9x. That’s a bit above its average, but nowhere near the nearly 27x it hit in 2021.

Recursion is further from paying its own way. Over the trailing 12 months it had $54.9 million of revenue and a $518.9 million net loss. It did raise $200 million at $3.25 a share on Oct. 15, so the cash is there for now.

Absci runs on sentiment

Absci is the furthest of the three from its fundamentals. It brought in $0.3 million of revenue in the second quarter of 2026. Even before today’s jump, it was worth roughly eight times its cash and short-term investments. That cash rose sharply in the June quarter after a $100 million stock offering, which included a $40 million strategic investment from Eli Lilly…

…and Absci has burned $26 million to $29 million of free cash flow in each of the past four quarters:

Management says its cash should fund operations into the second half of 2028, so there’s no funding crunch coming soon. The valuation rests on ABS-201, which posted positive interim Phase 1 data in the HEADLINE trial this year.

Nov. 12 is the real test

My take: Schrödinger’s rally has the most business behind it. Absci’s rally is a bet on ABS-201 riding a risk-on day. A stock that jumps 12% on no news can give it back just as fast when the mood turns.

The next real news comes soon. Recursion hosts a webinar on updated REC-4881 data on Nov. 3. Schrödinger reports after the close on Nov. 4, and Absci reports before the open on Nov. 12.
