What Happened?
Super Micro Computer (SMCI) said on October 20 that preliminary September-quarter revenue should land at $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion, against guidance of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion. Shares closed at $35.81 on October 28, then fell 3.85% on October 29, with no catalyst reported, and 4.30% on October 30, when Intel’s PC warning hit hardware stocks and Dell Technologies (DELL) dropped 10.77%.
The October 30 close of $32.95 was 48 cents above the pre-update close. With preliminary numbers out, the November 3 report, due after the close, has to answer two questions the preview did not: how durable the neocloud business is, and whether the margin holds.
Staiger Says the Neocloud Worry Will Still Be There at $68 Billion
At Goldman Sachs’ September 10 tech conference, analyst Katherine Murphy cited third-party data estimating a 40% market share for Super Micro in neocloud servers. She asked whether maturing neoclouds would turn to Taiwanese contract manufacturers or a lower-cost model. Michael Staiger, SVP of Corporate Development, said the concern “was around at $7 billion at $15 billion at $22 billion, at $39 billion, and it’s going to exist at $68 billion,” close to the midpoint of the $65 billion to $72 billion fiscal 2027 guide.
His defense was speed: integrated racks get customers online faster. Earlier in the session, explaining margins, he said “our systems at the neoclouds are serving hyperscalers.”
The newer question is funding. On October 27, Reuters reported that Super Micro-backed Argentum AI is in talks for a $5 billion private credit deal to buy AI chips, citing two people familiar with the matter. Super Micro shares rose 7.34% that day. The same report said financing for neoclouds has tightened, so the talks point to both appetite for capacity and a harder path to funding it.

Analysts Model a Thinner Margin Than September’s
Staiger said the September quarter’s 10.6% gross margin guide midpoint included pressure from contracts that “potentially dug through from the prior quarter,” and that more integrated rack components carry a higher margin. The preliminary 12.0% to 12.5% beat it. As of November 2, analysts tracked by TIKR expect fiscal 2027 gross margin of around 10.3%.
Revenue estimates lag too: TIKR’s September-quarter consensus of around $16.3 billion sits below the preliminary low end.
Two risks cut the other way: Intel tied its PC warning to memory prices and availability, a cost pressure for hardware makers, and the export-control case against people tied to the company, in which Super Micro is not a defendant, remains open.

TIKR Advanced Model Analysis
- Current Price: $32.95
- Target Price (Mid): ~$61
- Potential Total Return: ~84%
- Annualized IRR: ~14% / year

The mid case assumes revenue growth of around 16% a year and a net income margin of around 5.4%, below the 6.0% the model card shows for the past year, with the P/E shrinking about 4% a year. Its main risk is gross margin sliding back toward 10%. If the margin holds near 12%, estimates have room to rise. If neocloud funding tightens further, growth could slow after fiscal 2027.
Conclusion
Watch the December-quarter gross margin guide on November 3. A guide near 12% would suggest September’s customer and product mix was not a one-off. A guide back toward 10% would support the lower margin analysts model, and any comment on neocloud customers’ funding would show which way the $68 billion debate is leaning.
