What Happened?
Shopify (SHOP) stock is getting a lift after Bernstein analyst Mark Shmulik started coverage with an Outperform rating and a $160 price target.
In his note, Shmulik said Shopify is “perfectly positioned to lead the way” in commerce innovation, and investors seem to be taking that bullish call seriously today.
The reasoning behind the upgrade is pretty simple. Bernstein pointed out that Shopify doesn’t just help merchants run an online store.
The platform covers the whole commerce journey, from getting customers in the door to processing payments to handling order fulfillment.
That full-package approach is a big reason Bernstein likes Shopify stock right now.
AI is another piece of the bull case. Bernstein believes AI is making it easier for new entrepreneurs to start businesses, which means more potential customers who’ll eventually need commerce infrastructure.
That’s a growing market Shopify is positioned to capture.
This upgrade comes at a timely moment. Shopify’s most recent quarter was strong, with GMV, revenue, gross profit, and free cash flow all growing more than 30%.
Despite those numbers, Shopify stock had still fallen over 14% in the past month heading into today. So this Bernstein call is landing right when the stock needed some good news.

Valuation is worth watching too.
Even after the recent pullback, Shopify trades at a forward P/E of 51, way above the sector average of 22.
That’s a premium investors are paying for growth, and it means the company still has to keep delivering to justify that price tag.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Shopify Stock
Overall, Wall Street still leans bullish on Shopify.
As of September 11, the consensus rating on Shopify stock was Buy, with a median 12-month price target of $175.
That implies roughly 36% upside from current levels, which helps explain why a fresh Outperform rating is getting attention.

That said, the market isn’t ignoring the risks.
Shopify faces real competition from other large tech platforms, and its premium valuation leaves little room for error.
Today’s rally suggests investors are focusing on the growth story and AI tailwinds for now, but the stock’s recent monthly decline shows sentiment can shift quickly.
Shopify’s path forward likely depends on whether it can keep growing fast enough to close the gap between where it trades today and where analysts think it should be.
