What Happened?
AbbVie (ABBV) stock ticked higher today as management laid out a detailed growth story at the Wells Fargo 21st Annual Healthcare Conference.
Executives spent the session walking investors through where the company stands now that it’s moved past the HUMIRA patent cliff, and the message was clear: AbbVie stock still has plenty of runway left.
The biggest theme was immunology. SKYRIZI and RINVOQ are now in their eighth year of growth, and management said both drugs still have real room to gain more market share.
Chief Commercial Officer Jeff Stewart explained that competition in the IBD space has played out exactly as AbbVie expected, with rival IL-23 drugs picking up some share, but the overall category growing fast enough that AbbVie keeps winning too.
Several near-term catalysts are in view.
A subcutaneous induction option for SKYRIZI in Crohn’s disease is expected to get FDA approval this fall, and management called the underlying trial data “exceptional,” saying it topped even AbbVie’s own IV version in effectiveness.
Combination studies pairing SKYRIZI with a new alpha-4 beta-7 antibody showed remission rates doubled compared to SKYRIZI alone, which is a big deal for a company trying to defend a multibillion-dollar franchise.
Data from hidradenitis suppurativa trials for lutikizumab and RINVOQ are also expected later this year.
On the money side, AbbVie has been aggressive but disciplined.
The company has spent about $20 billion on acquisitions in recent years, roughly $10 billion of that on smaller, earlier-stage deals, while also raising annual R&D spending by $3.5 billion since 2022 to nearly $10 billion a year.
CFO Scott Reents made a point of saying AbbVie isn’t desperate for deals. “We have a strong balance sheet. We’ve got the financial capacity to do a number of things,” he said, adding the company has “growth well into the next decade.”
Notably, AbbVie doesn’t face its next major patent expiration until 2030, when VRAYLAR loses exclusivity.

Oncology also got real attention.
AbbVie highlighted etentamig, a BCMA-targeting therapy for multiple myeloma, where trial results were strong enough that independent monitors asked to stop the study early after just 11 months.
The company says the drug only requires 13 injections a year, compared to up to 54 for some competing treatments, a real convenience edge for patients and doctors alike.
In neuroscience, AbbVie pointed to bretisilocin, a psychedelic-assisted depression treatment with a roughly two-hour treatment session, much shorter than some rivals that take over six hours.

What the Market Is Telling Us About AbbVie Stock
Today’s modest gain in AbbVie stock suggests investors are responding well to management’s confident tone and the steady drumbeat of pipeline updates.
Nothing here is a single dramatic catalyst; it’s more that AbbVie keeps checking boxes: strong quarterly beats, expanding drug indications, and a balance sheet that gives it options rather than pressure.

For a company expected to struggle after losing HUMIRA exclusivity, the market seems to be rewarding proof that its diversification strategy is working.
