What Happened?

Seagate (STX) stock fell 3% on Monday, dragging down the broader memory chip sector, after CEO Dave Mosley made comments at a JPMorgan conference that spooked investors.

  • His message was simple but unsettling: demand for Seagate’s products is outpacing what the company can realistically produce — and there’s no quick fix.
  • When asked what it would take to add more production capacity, Mosley was blunt.
  • Diverting engineering teams to build new factories or bring up new machines would take too long and would actually slow the rate of technology improvement.
  • In other words, chasing short-term volume could hurt long-term competitiveness.

He also flagged that lead times are very long and visibility only stretches four to five quarters out — even as customer demand runs significantly higher than that.

The selloff wasn’t limited to Seagate stock. Shares of Micron, SanDisk, and Western Digital all closed down roughly 5%, suggesting investors are broadly worried about whether the sector can keep pace with the AI infrastructure buildout.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Seagate Stock

The irony here is that Seagate stock was already having a strong year.

The company just reported record Q3 results — revenue up 44% year-over-year, gross margins at an all-time high, and nearly $1 billion in free cash flow. Management also raised its annual revenue growth target to at least 20% and guided to Q4 revenue of $3.45 billion, up 41% year-over-year.

The problem isn’t weak demand. It’s too much of it. Nearline capacity is almost fully allocated through 2027. Customer commitments are already stretching into 2028.

Seagate stock is caught in an unusual spot where excellent results are being overshadowed by the fear that growth is supply-constrained rather than demand-constrained.

STX Stock Valuation Model (TIKR)

For long-term investors, this could actually be a positive signal. Pricing power remains strong, margins are expanding, and the second-generation Mozaic HAMR platform is ramping on schedule.

But near-term sentiment is clearly rattled by the idea that Seagate stock’s upside may be capped by physics and factory timelines rather than customer appetite.
