What Happened?

Salesforce, Inc. (CRM) jumped on August 13 after JPMorgan’s Samik Chatterjee started coverage at Overweight with a $250 target and told clients the market’s fear of AI eating enterprise software is “overblown”. Then the move unwound. Shares closed at $196.21 the next session, giving back the pop and finishing below where they traded before the call. For a stock down more than 20% in 2026, it was the loudest bull call from a big bank since Guggenheim’s initiation in early July, and the market erased it in a day.

JPMorgan’s call arrived less than two weeks before Salesforce reports fiscal Q2 on August 26, and the reversal shows the skepticism UBS is voicing: the recovery earlier this summer raised the bar into a print the stock now has to clear. One bank sees a cheap multiple pricing in a decline that will not come. The other sees a recovery that raised the bar into a print it has to clear.

Why JPMorgan Thinks the Discount Is a Mistake

At roughly 14 times forward earnings, CRM sits near the low end of its post-2022 range. JPMorgan reads that as the market pricing in further deceleration rather than progress toward the Rule of 50 framework Salesforce set for fiscal 2030, a combined subscription growth rate and non-GAAP operating margin summing to 50, on a path to more than $60 billion in revenue. Chatterjee argued the stock works even without acceleration, purely on sustained growth and margins, because the multiple is that undemanding. UBS lifted its target to $210 but kept a Neutral rating, and Wells Fargo went to $205 at Equal-weight. Only JPMorgan and Stifel, also at $250, put a bullish rating behind the move.

Salesforce CMO Patrick Stokes, speaking at the Mizuho Technology Conference in June, said the frontier labs everyone assumes will disrupt Salesforce are among its heaviest users, running it through their own agentic interfaces rather than the UI. “There’s actually an expansion of usage and expansion of consumption,” Stokes said, describing token consumption on existing seats spiking as customers connect Salesforce to tools like Claude and Codex through MCP. If AI agents drive more consumption of Salesforce data rather than less, the seat-replacement fear has the direction of the trade backward.

The One Number That Decides Whether the Initiation Ages Well

Salesforce has spent 2026 absorbing a single anxiety: that the AI agents it now sells will retire the human seats its customers have paid for since 1999. That fear drove the stock 43.61% below its high into the June 22 trough. The Q1 print in May did little to settle it, though the numbers were strong. Revenue hit $11.13 billion, up 13.27% year over year, adjusted EPS of $3.88 beat the $3.13 consensus by 24%, and free cash flow reached $6.56 billion in the quarter.

The metric to watch is not headline EPS, which Salesforce reliably beats. It is the current remaining performance obligation growth and net new order value, the forward-bookings signals that show whether Agentforce is converting adoption into contracted revenue. Agentforce and Data 360 combined ARR reached $2.9 billion exiting fiscal 2026, with Agentforce near $800 million, but the platform is still a low-single-digit share of total revenue. The bridge from deal count to durable growth has to appear in bookings, not the press release.

The bet is that token consumption moves beyond coding into everyday knowledge work, the meetings and analysis that need trusted enterprise context. “That’s where we think Salesforce is perfectly positioned because we think it’s knowledge work,” he said, pointing to the scarce inputs Salesforce controls, context, and trust, that a raw language model cannot supply.

Salesforce trades near 14 times forward earnings, against ServiceNow at above 27 times, Intuit at near 13, and Adobe at near 10. Salesforce is priced with the cheapest quality names in the group while still growing double digits at a 34.8% EBIT margin, which is the mispricing JPMorgan is pointing at.

Two drivers carry the number. Revenue is modeled compounding near 12% annually, above the trailing pace, on Agentforce and Data 360 consumption scaling across the installed base, plus multi-cloud attach as customers run agents across sales, service, and marketing. The margin driver is net income margin expanding toward 28% as token costs commoditize and operating leverage builds. The primary risk is the mirror image: if organic revenue growth does not reaccelerate off its recent pace, the roughly 12% CAGR assumption breaks, and the target compresses toward the Street’s ~$242 mean.

The upside is that Agentforce turns adoption into contracted double-digit growth and the multiple lifts off a trough, delivering the model’s return. The downside is that AI pressures seat-based pricing faster than consumption revenue replaces it, in which case 14 times forward earnings is not a discount at all. This is the mid-case, not the high case, which reaches around $857.

Conclusion

August 26 decides this. Watch current remaining performance obligation growth and net new order value on the print, not the EPS beat Salesforce will almost certainly deliver. cRPO holding double digits and accelerating from the roughly 16% pace it exited fiscal 2026 would confirm the H2 reacceleration the bull case is built on. A deceleration there, even alongside another beat, tells that the seat fear is winning and the discount is earned. The initiation bought Salesforce one day of goodwill before the market took it back. The bookings line decides whether the call ages well.
