What Happened?

Alphabet (GOOGL) CEO Sundar Pichai said in an October 20 interview on the Big Technology podcast that Google Cloud is giving up short-term revenue so frontier AI research gets first claim on computing power. He called Google DeepMind’s compute needs “non-negotiable” and said serving new customers asking for 2027 capacity would be “incredibly difficult.” Alphabet closed October 21 at $334.76, down 1.62%. The third-quarter report, due after the close on October 28, will be the first look at what that trade-off costs.

Demand Keeps Arriving at a Rationed Cloud

Pichai did not say how much Cloud revenue Google is giving up. The demand side kept growing anyway. OpenAI’s models began rolling out on Google Cloud in private preview on October 21, a launch TIKR covered on October 22. Customers will be able to pay for them by drawing down Google Cloud spend commitments, according to OpenAI’s announcement. Neither announcement said how that revenue is split. Amazon (AMZN) made OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra generally available on AWS in September, and OpenAI said Microsoft (MSFT) remains its primary cloud partner.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian made the case for model choice at Goldman Sachs’ Communacopia conference on September 8. On security, he argued that “no model finds a super set of all the other models,” so customers should scan with several. He also described a business paid at every layer: “Some people buy us for silicon. Some people use our models. Some people use our data platforms.” Every model Google adds widens demand for capacity that Pichai says is already rationed.

The Cash Bill Is Getting Bigger

Analysts are still raising revenue estimates. Consensus 2027 revenue sits around $627 billion, up from about $615 billion at September 30, and third-quarter revenue is expected near $128 billion, up around 25%. The cash cost is growing too: consensus 2027 free cash flow is around negative $37 billion, deeper than the roughly negative $32 billion TIKR cited on September 25, before turning strongly positive in 2029.

Gemini also carries a legal overhang. A pending class action alleges Alphabet misled investors about delays to Gemini 3.5 Pro, allegations that remain unproven.

Alphabet Advanced Valuation Model (TIKR)

The TIKR model’s mid case puts Alphabet at around $707 by December 31, 2030, roughly 20% a year from the October 21 close. That target is little changed from TIKR’s October 11 analysis, so the lower share price lifted the implied return to about 111% from about 102%. The case assumes revenue growth around 17% a year, a net income margin around 33% and a P/E that shrinks about 2.6% a year, so earnings growth does the work. The Street’s mean target of about $430 sits around 29% above the close. The main risk is that rationed capacity keeps capex high and pushes the cash recovery past 2028.

Conclusion

October 28 is the first read on rationing. Google Cloud grew 82% in Q2, a figure that included TPU system sales. Growth near that pace with total revenue above the roughly $128 billion consensus would mean the compute squeeze costs less than Pichai’s comments implied. A sharp Cloud slowdown alongside another capex increase would mean the opposite.
