Key Takeaways

  • Penguin Solutions (PENG) stock is up 134% in 2026 after Q4 sales jumped 68% and management guided to about 40% sales growth in fiscal 2027.
  • Free cash flow hasn’t kept up: it swung to an outflow of $163 million in fiscal 2026 as inventory nearly tripled.
  • Penguin covered the gap by selling $750 million of convertible notes, and total debt ended the year at $853 million, up from $525 million.
  • The next report, likely in early January, will show whether that inventory is turning into cash.

Penguin Solutions is up 134% in 2026, even after a sharp pullback from its high, as investors bet on AI data centers and the memory that goes into them.

Now the business has to show it can pay for that growth out of its own cash.

What exactly happened

On Oct. 6, Penguin reported sales of $567 million for its fiscal Q4, which ended Aug. 28. That was up 68% from a year earlier, and management guided to about 40% sales growth in fiscal 2027.

Most of the quarter’s growth came from memory: Integrated Memory sales jumped 158% to $341 million, or 60% of the total, while Advanced Computing grew 11% to $154 million.

Analysts expect sales of $2.45 billion in fiscal 2027 and $2.75 billion in fiscal 2028:

The cash went the other way

From fiscal 2022 to fiscal 2025, free cash flow ran between $58 million and $100 million a year. In fiscal 2026, Penguin’s best sales year yet, it swung to an outflow of $163 million.

Capital spending was just $12 million for the year, so the outflow came from working capital.

Inventory ended fiscal 2026 at $749 million, up from $255 million a year earlier, and receivables stood at $796 million.

Penguin borrowed to fill the gap. In Q4, it sold $750 million of 0% convertible notes due 2031 and paid off the $100 million it owed under its credit agreement.

Total debt ended the year at $853 million, up from $525 million:

Now the inventory has to ship

Management said it built that inventory to match customers’ deployment schedules.

So it should turn into cash as those AI projects ship and customers pay. Plus, analysts expect growth to slow to 12% in fiscal 2028, and a company growing more slowly has less new inventory to buy.

On the Q4 call, management said: “Improving working capital efficiency remains an important priority for fiscal 2027.”

Show me the cash

So far, Penguin’s free cash flow hasn’t kept up. It fell in the year sales hit a record, and the convertible notes covered the gap.

One year of that doesn’t worry me much, and $647 million of cash gives Penguin room to carry its inventory through fiscal 2027. A second year would.

I’d find the stock’s low multiple much harder to trust if the earnings kept failing to show up as cash.

Bank of America is more upbeat. It initiated coverage on Oct. 9 with a Buy rating and a $100 target, about triple the last close.

The first check is Penguin’s fiscal Q1 report, likely in early January. Watch inventory and operating cash flow as closely as EPS.

Of course, one quarter’s cash flow can swing a lot with the timing of big deployments.
