Key Takeaways
- Morgan Stanley earned $3.03 per share on $20.3 billion of revenue, with equities trading up 41% to $5.8 billion.
- Wealth Management posted record revenue of $9.1 billion and record net new assets of $232 billion.
- Just over half of those inflows came from IPO-linked activity, which ties growth to a hot listings market.
- The stock trades about 21% below its 52-week high, and Anthropic’s IPO timing is the next swing factor.
Ted Pick has a $10.5 trillion problem. It is a good problem, but investors keep asking how much of it will last.
Morgan Stanley (MS) said total client assets across Wealth and Investment Management reached $10.5 trillion in the third quarter. Only three months earlier, it crossed $10 trillion.
Pick credited “the scale of our platform and the strength of our franchise.” The market sounded less impressed. Shares closed Thursday at $184, down 1.6%, and have fallen 15.3% over three months. sec
The worry is simple. Much of that growth arrived with the IPO boom, and booms end.
Equities and wealth carried the quarter
The headline numbers cleared the bar comfortably:
- Revenue rose 12% to $20.3 billion, ahead of about $19.95 billion expected.
- EPS reached $3.03 against a $2.91 consensus, with ROTCE at 22.6%. kaohooninternational
- Equities trading jumped 41% to $5.8 billion, beating forecasts by roughly $909 million. kaohooninternational
Investment banking was the drag, with revenue down 15% to $1.5 billion on lighter advisory and debt underwriting. Management still described the pipeline as robust.
Wealth Management did the rest. Revenue hit a record $9.1 billion, up from $8.2 billion, with a 30.4% pre-tax margin.
That record looks even better against the longer trend.

Wealth now generates revenue nearly as large as Institutional Securities, which gives the firm a steadier base through trading cycles.
Inflows with an IPO tailwind
Net new assets hit a record $232 billion, and fee-based flows reached $80 billion. Just over half of the inflows came from IPO-linked activity, including a new corporate retirement mandate in the Workplace channel. privatebankerinternational
That makes the business more cyclical than it looks. When employees at newly public companies get liquid, Morgan Stanley often administers the stock plan and captures the assets.
For scale, the entire Asset & Wealth Management segment at Goldman Sachs (GS) produced $5.05 billion of revenue last quarter.
The pipeline still looks full. Morgan Stanley and Goldman are lined up to lead Anthropic’s potential IPO, which could value the company at as much as $2 trillion.
Funding is diversifying as well. A new Raisin partnership brings Morgan Stanley into UK savings, with fixed-term deposits paying as much as 5.1% from a £1,000 minimum.
Is the growth showing up in the bottom line?

Consensus has EPS compounding about 15.5% a year over the next two years, which assumes the flows keep coming.

Pricing a slower IPO window
Valuation already carries a premium. Morgan Stanley trades at 13.8x forward earnings and 2.71x book, above Goldman at 12.4x and 2.39x.
Wealth justifies most of that premium. Yet the wealth engine now depends partly on the same IPO flows that drive Goldman’s banking fees.
Capital returns provide a floor. The firm bought back $1.5 billion of stock last quarter, pays a $1.15 quarterly dividend for a 2.5% yield, and has a $20 billion buyback authorization.
Where does the stock sit in its own range?

Shares have given back much of their rally and sit about 21% below the $232 peak. The average price target of $213 implies roughly 16% upside.
My take: I like the wealth engine, but I would be careful paying up for the IPO-driven slice of it. Strip out half the inflows and the business still gathers more than $100 billion a quarter, which supports a premium multiple. The real risk is a pause in listings that hits investment banking and wealth inflows at the same time.
The Q4 report in mid-January is the next checkpoint, though news on Anthropic’s IPO timing could matter sooner. Watch whether net new assets stay above $100 billion without the IPO boost.
