Why MongoDB Stock Fell 18% After Its CEO Left for Meta

MongoDB (MDB) stock fell 18% to $335 on Monday, September 28, after CEO Chirantan “CJ” Desai stepped down with immediate effect to join Meta Platforms. He lasted less than a year in the job.

The destination made the exit sting. Desai will report to Mark Zuckerberg as chief enterprise platform officer, selling Meta’s AI models and agents to corporate customers. So investors lost a CEO and gained a question: whether Meta becomes a rival for the enterprise AI budgets MongoDB is chasing.

MongoDB named Dev Ittycheria, CEO from 2014 to 2025, as interim chief and reaffirmed its Q3 and fiscal 2027 guidance. Piper Sandler called the departure disappointing but views “the share-price reaction as overdone.”

Monday’s selloff priced MongoDB stock for leadership risk while the forecast stayed put.
