What Happened?
Micron Technology (MU) says AI is now doing a share of its engineering. At its October 21 technology webinar, Micron showed AI tools cut development time for its latest data center SSD by 60% from the prior generation. President and Chief Technology and Products Officer Scott DeBoer called a 2x shorter path from innovation to high-volume manufacturing a goal Micron is “well down the road on.”
Shares fell 6.26% on October 22 as memory stocks sold off and a strike began at a Micron plant in Taiwan, then rose 2.46% to $877.55 on October 23 as chip stocks rebounded, even as SanDisk (SNDK) and Western Digital (WDC) fell.
When Supply Is Short, Engineering Speed Sets the Pace
Micron’s outlook explains the emphasis. On the September 30 earnings call, CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said “we do not have line of sight to when supply and demand will return to balance.” When every bit sells, growth depends on how fast Micron can design, qualify and ramp its next products.
That is how DeBoer answered Futurum’s Daniel Newman, who asked how Micron keeps up with demand. He led with AI, calling it “a key piece that we are depending on to increase our bandwidth.” According to Micron’s internal program data, silicon-to-tape-out time for a data center SSD controller fell 50%, and the full SSD took 60% less time, using AI-generated firmware, AI root-cause analysis and agents.

Both examples are storage products. DeBoer said AI tools reach “every single engineering employee,” from basic physics to manufacturing, but the webinar’s measured results came from SSDs, not DRAM or high-bandwidth memory (HBM).
Meta Is Co-Designing Micron’s Next Low-Power Memory
Customer co-design is the other half of the plan. On October 21, Micron released a white paper with Meta Platforms (META) on optimizing LPDDR6, a low-power memory, for data centers. DeBoer said Micron’s LPDDR6 brings 35% improved power versus LPDDR5. China’s CXMT (688825) plans server memory on a denser 4F² cell design by year-end, an approach DeBoer dismissed, but any new supplier would still need to clear the same customer validation Micron is running with Meta.

A Union Vote Keeps Taiwan Risk Open Until October 27
The nearer risk sits in Micron’s fabs, where AI tools do not help. Micron’s Taoyuan union in Taiwan said on October 23 that about 70% of its members rejected the company’s profit-sharing proposal, a day after a 24-hour strike that DIGITIMES called the first in Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. Micron makes around 50% to 60% of its chips in Taiwan, according to AFP. It reached a deal with its Taichung union on October 21, and Taoyuan talks resume October 27. No production impact had been reported as of October 23.

TIKR Advanced Model Analysis
- Current Price: $877.55
- Target Price (Mid): ~$1,174
- Potential Total Return: ~34%
- Annualized IRR: ~6% / year

The mid case is measured from the $877.55 close. The model’s 10-year forecast table (2026 to 2036) assumes around 11% annual revenue growth and a net margin around 61%. The thin spot is the realization year: TIKR’s fiscal 2031 consensus rests on one analyst, who forecasts revenue down about 46%. If a downturn arrives that early, the mid case is too generous. Wall Street’s mean target of ~$1,562, set on a shorter horizon, is higher.
Conclusion
Micron’s fiscal first-quarter report comes next, against a $60 billion to $63 billion revenue guide; last year’s fiscal first-quarter report came on December 17. Revenue at or above $63 billion would show Micron is getting more product out the door. A result below $60 billion, or a production hit from Taoyuan, would show the bottleneck is Micron’s own output.
