Meta Platforms (META) has banned TikTok owner ByteDance from advertising on Facebook, Instagram and its other apps in seven countries, effective immediately on Thursday. The stock barely moved, closing Thursday at about $721.
The ban covers the US, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. It also blocks third-party campaigns that send users to TikTok or other ByteDance services. “We don’t have to run ads from a competitor whose goal is to pull people off our apps,” Meta spokesperson Chris Sgro said, calling the move standard business practice. TikTok hasn’t responded.
Meta Can Afford to Say No

Meta’s revenue grew 22% to about $201 billion in 2025, after 22% growth in 2024.
That’s about $36 billion of new revenue in a single year. Meta hasn’t said how much ByteDance spent, but for scale, every $1 billion of lost ads would be about 0.5% of 2025 revenue. The revenue exposure remains unknown because Meta hasn’t disclosed ByteDance’s spending in the affected markets. The benefit is that Meta stops selling a rival the tools to recruit Meta’s own users, one ad at a time.
The country list matters too. Four of the seven are in Asia, including Indonesia, one of TikTok’s largest user bases. Meta appears to be drawing the line where it competes hardest with TikTok for attention.
The Question Meta’s TikTok Ban Leaves Open
The unknown is where ByteDance’s budget goes next. If TikTok moves that spending to Alphabet’s (GOOGL) YouTube and search ads, Meta’s loss becomes Google’s gain. If TikTok retaliates by restricting Meta’s ads on its own platform, the fight shifts from ad dollars to distribution.
Either way, Meta has decided that keeping users on its apps is worth more than a rival’s ad budget. Its next earnings call could give management an opportunity to discuss the impact, but the third-quarter results will cover a period before the ban took effect.
