What Happened?

Marathon Digital (MARA) stock jumped 16% on Thursday, crossing $11, after the company announced a deal to acquire Long Ridge Energy & Power.

The acquisition significantly expands MARA’s power capacity and pushes the company deeper into high-performance computing and AI infrastructure, a shift away from relying purely on Bitcoin mining.

This move fits management’s broader strategy. Instead of just mining Bitcoin, MARA has been working to lock down large-scale power assets that can flex between crypto mining and AI workloads, whichever makes more sense at the time. The Long Ridge deal is the latest and biggest step in that direction.

The rally got an extra push from CoreWeave, whose strong Q2 results acted as a sympathy catalyst for Marathon Digital stock. CoreWeave raised its compute pricing by 25% and grew its contribution margins, pointing to surging enterprise demand for AI data center capacity.

That news reinforced the idea that MARA’s own pivot toward AI infrastructure, spread across its 19 data centers and a 2-gigawatt site in Texas, is heading in the right direction.

MARA’s massive Bitcoin holdings are also playing a role. With roughly 35,577 BTC on the books, worth about $2.1 billion, the stock tends to move like a high-beta bet on crypto sentiment. Any positive mood around Bitcoin tends to amplify moves in Marathon Digital stock, and today was no exception.

What makes the move stand out even more is that the broader market gave MARA no help. The S&P 500 fell, the Dow dropped, and the Nasdaq slid during the session.

That means today’s gain in Marathon Digital stock was driven entirely by company-specific news, not a market-wide rally.

MARA Stock Revenue, EBIT and Free Cash Flow Estimates in Billion USD (TIKR)

Analyst opinions heading into today were mixed.

Clear Street has a price target of $10, Morgan Stanley has stayed cautious, and Cantor Fitzgerald maintains an Overweight rating.

There was also some noise around insider selling, as both the CEO and CFO completed previously scheduled share sales on August 17 under Rule 10b5-1 trading plans, something that had weighed on sentiment in recent sessions.

What the Market Is Telling Us About MARA Holdings Stock

Today’s move shows investors are willing to look past near-term profitability concerns and insider selling when a company delivers a genuinely transformative announcement.

The Long Ridge acquisition, combined with CoreWeave’s results validating the broader AI infrastructure trend, was enough to break Marathon Digital stock out of its recent $9 to $10 trading range.

The fact that this happened while the rest of the market was falling suggests real conviction behind the move, not just broader risk-on sentiment lifting all stocks.

Still, with mixed analyst price targets and MARA’s Bitcoin treasury adding volatility, investors should expect this stock to remain sensitive to both crypto price swings and how quickly the AI infrastructure pivot actually shows up in the numbers.
