What Happened?

Intel (INTC) stock fell nearly 4% on Monday after the company said it would sell $15 billion worth of common stock. By Tuesday, that offering had grown, with Intel raising $20 billion after strong investor demand pushed it above the original target.

Intel said it plans to use the money for general corporate purposes. That includes capital expenditures and working capital, the kind of spending needed to keep building out its chip factories. The company pointed to strong demand as the reason behind the raise.

Customers keep signaling they want more AI computing power, and Intel sees big opportunities ahead in areas like physical AI, custom chip designs, advanced packaging, and its foundry business, which makes chips for outside customers.

J.P. Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Citigroup are serving as joint book-running managers. Underwriters also have a 30-day option to buy up to $2.25 billion more in shares.

This isn’t coming out of nowhere. Intel raised its 2026 capital spending forecast from $18 billion to $20 billion back in July, driven largely by surging demand for CPUs tied to AI agents.

That demand has outpaced what Intel’s factories can currently produce.

The company is also pushing hard on its 14A manufacturing process, committing to high-volume production by 2028. That plan got a boost after Tesla signed on as a 14A customer.

There’s also been speculation, though unconfirmed by either company, that Apple could work with Intel on chip manufacturing following comments from President Trump.

On top of all that, Intel committed roughly $5.77 billion last month to expand its chip manufacturing hub in Ireland, a project that alone makes up more than a quarter of this year’s planned capital spending.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Intel Stock

The initial drop in Intel stock reflects a normal reaction to dilution. When a company issues billions of dollars in new shares, existing shareholders end up owning a slightly smaller piece of the pie, and the market often prices that in right away.

But the bigger picture tells a more optimistic story. As one analyst pointed out, Intel spent much of the 2010s buying back $82 billion of its own stock rather than investing in its factories, a strategy that arguably weakened the balance sheet over time.

Raising cash now, especially after the stock price has jumped fivefold since last August, looks like a shift back toward funding real physical growth instead of financial engineering.

For investors watching Intel stock, the key question is whether this capital gets deployed efficiently into capacity that customers are actually lined up to use.

With Tesla already on board for 14A chips and CPU demand outpacing supply, the market seems willing to give Intel the benefit of the doubt, even if Intel stock took a short-term hit on the announcement itself.
