Why IDXX Has Spent Most of 2026 in a Deep Drawdown
IDEXX Laboratories (IDXX) is one of the leading companies in veterinary diagnostics, supplying in-clinic analyzers, reference lab testing, and practice management software to veterinary practices worldwide.
The company holds a position in pet healthcare that looks a lot like a toll road: once a clinic installs IDEXX instruments and builds workflows around them, switching costs are high, and recurring consumable revenue follows automatically. Despite all of that, the stock spent most of this year grinding lower, and the reason comes down to one persistent concern: U.S. veterinary clinic visits have been soft.
When pet owners make fewer trips to the vet, diagnostic volume takes a hit, even if the underlying installed base keeps growing. That visit softness has been the dominant narrative around IDXX all year, and the market has priced it in heavily.

The drawdown chart captures exactly how the market has felt about that dynamic. IDEXX peaked near its 52-week high of $769.98 and began declining almost immediately in January, reaching a max drawdown of 27.36% by the end of June.
The stock has bounced around since then without mounting any meaningful recovery, and currently sits about 24% off that peak. It is a chart that reflects genuine uncertainty, not panic selling, and the distinction matters when you start looking at what the underlying business is actually doing.

The CAG Diagnostics Engine That Keeps Growing Regardless
Here is the part of the IDEXX story that the drawdown chart does not show. While U.S. visit volumes remain soft, IDEXX’s recurring diagnostic revenue has been decoupling from that trend. The reason is a combination of innovation and pricing power: as IDEXX introduces new tests and expands the diagnostic menu on its instruments, vets run more tests per visit even when visit counts are flat or slightly declining.
That dynamic is called diagnostic utilization, and it has been the engine keeping IDEXX’s numbers moving in the right direction.
In Q2 2026, CAG Diagnostics’ recurring revenue grew 10.3% organically. VetLab consumables, which are the reagents and cartridges that run through IDEXX analyzers every time a test is performed, grew 14.7% to $430 million. International markets added another layer, with international CAG revenue up more than 13%, as reported.
CEO Mike Erickson described the quarter plainly: “Our second-quarter results reflect the strength of our Technology for Life strategy, with continued innovation across our Catalyst, Fecal Dx, and IDEXX inVue Dx platforms supporting deeper customer adoption and higher diagnostic utilization.”

The EPS chart puts that executionQ2 into a longer context. Earnings per share have grown from $8.60 in FY2021 to $13.08 in FY2025, a steady climb with only one minor dip along the way. Consensus estimates see that trajectory continuing, with EPS projected to reach around $15 in FY2026 and approaching $24 by FY2030.
The growth here is not being driven by financial engineering; it is coming from a recurring revenue model that compounds quietly year after year as the installed base of instruments expands.

What the Valuation Model Says at $551
At current prices, IDXX trades at around 35 times forward earnings, which sounds expensive in isolation. The context that matters is what you are paying for: a business with 62% gross margins, 32% EBIT margins, and a recurring revenue model that has demonstrated it can grow through a period of genuine visit headwinds.
The Street’s mean price target of around $699 implies roughly 27% upside from current levels, and that estimate reflects fairly conservative assumptions about the trajectory.

The TIKR valuation model takes a longer view. Working from a mid-case assumption of around 9% annual revenue growth and net income margins expanding toward 27%, the model arrives at a target price of around $948, representing a potential total return of around 72% over roughly four and a half years, or about 13% annualized.
Importantly, the model bakes in modest P/E compression along the way, meaning those returns are projected to come from earnings growth rather than multiple expansion. That is a meaningful distinction: the model is not counting on the stock getting more expensive relative to earnings, just on IDEXX continuing to do what it has done for years.
Should You Buy IDXX Stock?
IDEXX is a high-quality business going through a period where the market is fixated on a real but manageable headwind. Visit softness is not a permanent structural problem, and the company’s innovation pipeline, including the inVue Dx cytology platform and an upcoming multi-cancer detection panel, gives IDEXX multiple levers to drive utilization higher regardless of visit trends.
The recurring revenue model, high switching costs, and expanding international footprint make this a genuinely durable compounder over a long horizon.
The risk is valuation, and even after a 28% decline from its peak, IDXX is not a cheap stock by conventional measures, and if the visit headwind deepens or the broader market continues to compress multiples on quality growth names, it could face further pressure.
Investors considering IDXX should also watch the pace of inVue Dx instrument placements and consumable revenue per unit closely, as those figures will determine whether the next growth leg materializes on the timeline management expects.
