Key Takeaways

  • GE Vernova stock fell 11% in the past week (through Tuesday’s close), while Vertiv lost 14% and Bloom Energy 15%, as investors sold AI-infrastructure stocks.
  • Venture Global’s power and grid deals with GE Vernova, worth up to $17.2 billion, didn’t help, since most of that is still reservations nobody has to turn into orders.
  • More than half of GE Vernova’s drop came on Oct. 14, when hotter US inflation data and worries about how AI build-outs get financed hit the whole group.
  • Analysts still expect GE Vernova’s earnings to more than double by 2028, and its third-quarter results before the open on Oct. 28 are the next test.

GE Vernova (GEV) stock is down 11% in the past week (through Tuesday’s close), and it wasn’t alone. Vertiv (VRT) lost 14% and Bloom Energy (BE) 15%, while the S&P 500 slipped just 1%.

GE Vernova’s own news didn’t start any of it.

Wall Street fell out of love with AI power

More than half of GE Vernova’s drop came on Oct. 14, when it fell 6.2%. Hotter US inflation data brought back worries about borrowing costs, and CoreWeave’s shares and bonds slid as investors questioned how the AI build-out gets paid for. (Susquehanna trimmed its target by $30 that morning, to $1,270, and kept its Positive rating.)

On Tuesday, the AI power trade slid again on AI-spending fears and oil above $110. GE Vernova fell 2.0%, and Vertiv and Bloom Energy fell with it.

Not even a $17 billion deal helped

The stock even fell 1.6% on Oct. 15, when Venture Global (VG) announced power and grid deals with GE Vernova and Baker Hughes worth up to $17.2 billion.

Very little of that is firm yet. Venture Global expects to order its first power island by the end of 2026. Eight more are reserved with GE Vernova, with orders expected from early 2027. Apart from the reservation fees, nobody has to buy the rest.

Even if GE Vernova kept all $17.2 billion through 2034, it would add roughly 10% to Power segment sales a year.

Cheaper, and the forecasts still climb

The slide has pushed GE Vernova’s forward P/E near the bottom of its range over the past year.

After Tuesday it’s closer to 42x. Its average over the past year was 55x, and it hit nearly 70x in April.

Analysts still expect normalized EPS to more than double, from $15.21 this year to $36.19 in 2028.

Nothing this week gives them a reason to cut. And the stock now sits below $940, the lowest target in TIKR’s Street data.

Oct. 28 is the real test

GE Vernova reports third-quarter results before the open on Oct. 28. It has missed EBIT estimates five quarters running. CEO Scott Strazik also warned in September that data centers’ share of Electrification orders will drop to “probably more like 20%” in the third quarter.

My take: a sell-off across the sector dragged down a company whose own story didn’t change. With the stock near the low end of its valuation range, that looks like a chance to buy. Of course, if AI-spending fears keep hitting the group, GE Vernova could keep sliding with it.
