What Happened?
Eli Lilly (LLY) stock dipped after the company announced its latest deal in an ongoing acquisition spree. Lilly agreed to buy privately-held Merida Biosciences for $2.9 billion in cash.
Merida’s lead candidate, MER511, is part of a pipeline of experimental biologic drugs targeting autoimmune and allergic diseases, including Graves’ disease and thyroid eye disease.
The deal adds early-stage precision immunology assets to a portfolio that already covers metabolic and neurology treatments.
It’s the latest in a string of business development moves this year for Eli Lilly, which has also picked up companies like Curevo, LimmaTech Biologics, the Vaccine Company, and AtaiBeckley in recent months to expand into infectious disease prevention and mental health.

Alongside the Merida news, Lilly also shared new Phase 3b TOGETHER trial results.
The data showed durable 52-week efficacy when combining Taltz and Zepbound in patients dealing with both psoriatic disease and obesity.
This dual therapy approach targets psoriatic disease activity and metabolic outcomes at the same time, a strategy Lilly is calling immunometabolism.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Eli Lilly Stock
The small drop in Eli Lilly stock suggests investors are still processing what this deal means for the company’s broader strategy.
Right now, Lilly’s growth story leans heavily on its GLP-1 franchise. In Q2, Zepbound and Mounjaro combined for $14.9 billion in revenue, up $6.3 billion year-over-year, and total company revenue grew 48% compared to the same period last year.
That heavy reliance on GLP-1 drugs is exactly why deals like Merida matter.
Analysts have pointed out the risk of leaning too much on one class of blockbuster drugs, especially with policy-driven pricing pressure a real concern across the industry.
Building out an autoimmune and immunology pipeline gives Lilly a second growth leg that doesn’t depend on incretin sales.
The TOGETHER trial data adds another layer. Rather than treating GLP-1 drugs as a standalone obesity story, Lilly is testing whether pairing them with existing immunology drugs like Taltz can address multiple conditions at once.
That fits the company’s stated strategy of pursuing “next-gen oral and injectable GLP-1, new indications, and precision therapies” alongside disciplined capital allocation.

Eli Lilly’s R&D engine has been busy across the board this year, with more than 40 active Phase 3 programs and increasing investment in pipeline expansion.
Whether Eli Lilly stock benefits long-term from this diversification push will depend on how these early-stage immunology assets progress through clinical trials, and how much investors continue to value Lilly as a GLP-1 leader versus a broader immunology and neuroscience company.
