Dell Finds a New Runway in the AI Cloud Race
Dell Technologies (DELL) rose about 5.8% this week after news broke that the company will supply technology for Volta, an AI cloud infrastructure startup that just raised funding at a $2.4 billion valuation. Nvidia is also backing the deal.
Volta plans to build out AI data center capacity using Nvidia-powered systems, and Dell’s role as a technology partner gives it exposure to a fresh customer beyond its usual base of hyperscalers and enterprises. AI cloud providers like Volta are a growing category, since they lease out AI compute capacity to companies that do not want to build their own data centers.
This adds to a string of AI wins for Dell. The company also expanded a secure AI and HPC platform for Texas A&M, showing it can deliver large, security-sensitive systems for demanding customers. HPC stands for high-performance computing, the type of infrastructure used for complex simulations and AI training.

The momentum builds on an already strong quarter. Dell’s most recent results showed revenue jumping 88% to $43.84 billion, powered largely by AI server demand. Because the exact revenue Dell will book from the Volta partnership has not been disclosed, investors should treat this as a growth opportunity rather than confirmed sales. If Dell stock keeps climbing on deal headlines like this, the real test will be whether AI server orders keep converting into profit.
Michael Dell has repeatedly framed this moment as a structural shift, saying on a recent call that customer demand for AI infrastructure spans hyperscalers, AI labs, and enterprises all at once, and that Dell is built to serve all three simultaneously.

Does the Math Still Work at $454?

Under valuation model assumptions realized through 1/31/29, the stock is modeled using:
- Revenue Growth (CAGR): 19.0%
- Operating Margins: 8.8%
- Exit P/E Multiple: 17.7x
Based on these inputs, the model estimates a target price of $504, implying 11.1% total upside and a 4.3% annualized return over the next 2.5 years.
That 4.3% annualized figure sits below the 5% threshold that typically signals a stock priced for very little future upside. Dell has already rallied hard this year on AI server strength, and the stock trades close to its 52-week high of $486, so much of the near-term good news looks baked in.

Dell’s low single-digit operating margin reflects the nature of its hardware business. Server assembly is a lower-margin, high-volume activity compared with software or chip design, which explains why Dell trades at a lower multiple than pure AI silicon names.
The Volta partnership adds a real growth lever, but until Dell discloses dollar figures tied to the deal, the model has no way to price it in. Because the stock has already climbed sharply, new upside now depends on Dell converting deal pipeline into disclosed backlog rather than just headline momentum.

Dell’s AI Server Rivals Are Also Racing Ahead
Dell competes most directly with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Super Micro Computer (SMCI) in the AI server market, and all three have ridden the same demand wave this year.

HPE has raised its full-year revenue growth outlook to a range of 29% to 33%, driven largely by its networking segment following the Juniper acquisition, and the stock trades near 21 times forward earnings. That is a richer multiple than Dell’s own 24.4 times NTM P/E, even though HPE’s growth rate looks similar to Dell’s forward two-year revenue CAGR of 30.3%.
Super Micro, meanwhile, trades far cheaper, at roughly 9 times forward earnings, despite guiding to around 64% revenue growth for fiscal 2026. That gap exists because Super Micro’s margins have been under pressure, compressing toward the high single digits as competition for AI server orders intensifies.
Dell’s edge is scale and diversification. Unlike Super Micro, which depends heavily on server sales, Dell spreads risk across PCs, storage, and enterprise software alongside its AI hardware business. That diversification helps explain why investors have been willing to pay a premium for Dell relative to Super Micro, even as both chase the same AI infrastructure boom.
What’s Driving DELL Stock Going Forward?
The clearest near-term catalyst is Dell’s fiscal Q2 2027 earnings report, expected around September 3. Investors will watch whether AI server orders keep accelerating and whether management raises guidance again after last quarter’s strong beat.
The Volta partnership is the wildcard. If Dell discloses specific revenue figures tied to the deal in coming quarters, that could reset analyst estimates higher. Until then, it remains a qualitative growth story rather than a modeled one.
Broader AI infrastructure spending trends matter too. Big technology companies continue ramping data center budgets, and Dell stands to benefit as long as that spending keeps flowing toward physical hardware rather than shifting purely toward custom chips.
Competitive dynamics also deserve attention. Because HPE and Super Micro are fighting for the same AI server contracts, pricing pressure could eventually squeeze Dell’s margins even as revenue keeps growing.
