What Happened?
AI is creating a complicated investment story for CrowdStrike Holdings (NASDAQ: CRWD), as enterprises need stronger cybersecurity protection to support AI adoption while investors worry that AI developers could become competitors. CrowdStrike stock fell about 7% on October 16, trading near $227 per share, as rising interest-rate concerns and a broader technology selloff pressured expensive growth stocks. Shares had recently reached a record high near $287, with Reuters highlighting weakening technical momentum as investors reassessed the stock’s premium valuation.
CrowdStrike shares came under pressure as reports of OpenAI’s potential acquisition of cybersecurity startup Trail of Bits raised concerns about AI developers entering the security market. According to Investor’s Business Daily, selling also spread across cybersecurity competitors Palo Alto Networks (PANW), Fortinet (FTNT), and Zscaler (ZS), following disclosure of an exploited vulnerability affecting Palo Alto’s firewall platform. Palo Alto shares fell more than 7% on Friday, adding to concerns about cybersecurity valuations amid broader technology weakness. The decline reflected overlapping competitive and market pressures rather than newly reported deterioration in CrowdStrike’s financial results.
Earlier management commentary highlighted the company’s underlying business momentum. At the September 10 Goldman Sachs technology conference, CEO George Kurtz reported 935 Falcon Flex deals in the latest quarter and approximately $2.3 billion in total Flex contract value, adding that Flex deal volume had tripled. Falcon Flex allows customers to expand their security subscriptions, while Falcon Guardian protects AI agents and SafeMind uses NVIDIA technology to automate security testing and defense. Kurtz described AI-driven cybersecurity demand as “a long tailwind,” highlighting opportunities to capture additional enterprise spending as AI adoption expands. CrowdStrike’s latest quarterly earnings release also showed Falcon Flex accounts generating more than $2.29 billion in annual recurring revenue, up 101% year over year.
Wall Street remained optimistic despite the selloff. According to reported analyst price target revisions, Citigroup raised its CrowdStrike target to $295 from $260 on October 15, while BTIG increased its target to $312 from $245, Wells Fargo lifted its target to $300 from $235, and Freedom Capital Markets raised its target to $320 from $260. KeyBanc followed on October 16, increasing its target to $265 from $245 after positive checks with 33 IT and security channel partners. CrowdStrike’s latest earnings results supported that optimism, with revenue growing 26% to $1.47 billion and record net new annual recurring revenue reaching $332.8 million, although investors continued questioning its premium valuation.

Is CrowdStrike Overvalued?
Under the original valuation scenario, the stock is modeled using:
- Revenue Growth (CAGR): 24%
- Operating Margins: 24%
- Exit P/E Multiple: 110x
CrowdStrike’s revenue outlook remains strong, with TIKR estimates pointing to growth from around $5 billion in fiscal 2026 to $9 billion in fiscal 2029, supported by enterprise cybersecurity spending and broader adoption of its Falcon security platform.
Falcon Flex remains central to that expansion, allowing existing customers to add more security products through flexible subscriptions. Demand for cloud protection, identity security, and Next-Gen SIEM, which analyzes security data to detect threats, creates opportunities to increase recurring revenue per customer. CrowdStrike’s Fal.Con 2026 announcements, previously covered by TIKR, also introduced AI security products and potential usage-based revenue from SafeMind, although their long-term financial contribution remains unproven.
Competition remains substantial, with Palo Alto Networks reporting 34% revenue growth in its latest quarter, compared with CrowdStrike’s 26%, while Fortinet reported 26% growth and a 34% GAAP operating margin. TIKR’s EBIT chart projects CrowdStrike’s annual operating profit rising from around $1 billion in fiscal 2026 to $2.6 billion in fiscal 2029, with forecast margins approaching 32%. However, CrowdStrike’s latest reported GAAP operating loss of $33.2 million highlights the importance of confirming the chart’s accounting basis before treating those estimates as GAAP profitability forecasts.

Based on the original assumptions, TIKR’s valuation model estimates a target price of around $240 by January 2029, implying about 6% upside from the recent $227 share price. However, the 110x exit P/E assumes investors will continue paying an exceptionally high earnings multiple, while the projected 24% operating margin requires a clear reconciliation with reported profitability. A lower exit multiple could materially reduce the model’s estimated value even if CrowdStrike delivers strong operating growth.
At current levels, CrowdStrike faces meaningful overvaluation risk under more conservative assumptions, despite appearing close to fairly valued in the original optimistic model. Performance through the remainder of 2026 depends on Falcon Flex expansion, adoption of AI agent security through Falcon Guardian, and whether rising recurring revenue translates into sustainable operating profits. Stronger execution could support a recovery, but the premium valuation leaves limited room for disappointing results.
