What Happened?

Coinbase (COIN) stock slid again as a new report added fresh scrutiny around the White House’s ties to the crypto industry.

A newly surfaced financial disclosure shows National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett held between $1 million and $5 million in Coinbase shares at the end of 2025, nearly 11 months into his time at the White House.

Hassett advised Coinbase before joining the administration and has said he recused himself from crypto-related matters.

But the timing raises questions. Three days after taking office, President Trump created a crypto working group inside the NEC, and Hassett’s office was required to receive its final recommendations.

That group later proposed major regulatory changes covering banking, stablecoins, and taxation.

Ethics expert Virginia Canter called it a clear conflict of interest, or at least the appearance of one, and questioned how a broad recusal could have affected Hassett’s ability to do a core part of his job: coordinating economic policy across agencies like Treasury, the SEC, and the CFTC.

Coinbase itself has been deeply involved in shaping crypto policy this year.

The SEC dropped its lawsuit against the company shortly after Trump took office, and Coinbase has spent heavily backing pro-crypto candidates through the Fairshake super PAC, including another $25 million pledged ahead of this year’s midterms.

CEO Brian Armstrong has met with Trump multiple times and is currently pushing for Senate passage of the Clarity Act, a bill meant to give the industry clearer federal rules.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Coinbase Stock

Coinbase stock has now dropped more than half from its 52-week high, and today’s move shows investors are still sensitive to any headline that touches the company’s political standing.

The Hassett story doesn’t change Coinbase’s underlying business, but it does highlight how closely tied the company’s fortunes are to Washington right now.

With the Clarity Act vote expected September 15, traders are watching regulatory headlines as closely as earnings.

Armstrong has said Coinbase expects “regulatory clarity one way or another,” whether the bill passes or not, but until that uncertainty clears, Coinbase stock is likely to keep reacting to political news as much as crypto prices.
