What Happened?
Apple (AAPL) stock climbed 4% on Thursday after the company officially launched its long-awaited foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, at an event in Cupertino on Wednesday.
The device starts at $1,999 and goes up to $3,199 for the highest storage option, positioning it firmly as a premium product.
New CEO John Ternus led the demonstration, showing off the Duo running apps like Zoom, Slack, and Netflix on its expanded display.
He pitched the larger screen as feeling “as natural and intuitive as iPad” and floated the idea that the Duo could serve as a personal AI hub going forward.
Not everyone in the room walked away convinced Apple nailed the pitch. Analysts noted the company didn’t clearly define who the phone is actually for.
Carolina Milanesi of Creative Strategies pointed out that Apple usually avoids narrowly defining its buyer, but in this case, the vague positioning stood out as a gap.
Neil Shah of Counterpoint Research echoed that, saying it wasn’t clear if the Duo is meant for work or play.
Despite the messaging questions, most analysts still expect strong initial sales for Apple stock investors to watch.
Counterpoint estimates Apple could sell close to 6 million Duo units by year-end, driven largely by pent-up demand from loyal iPhone users.
That alone would hand Apple roughly a quarter of the global foldable phone market.
Omdia projects the broader foldable market will hit 22.3 million units in 2026, with Apple’s entry marking the biggest year-over-year jump in foldable shipments since 2021.

Still, the foldable category overall remains a small slice of the smartphone world, expected to stay under 3% of global smartphone sales in 2026 and 2027, according to IDC.
Samsung remains the dominant player with 40% market share and recently launched its own redesigned foldable, even running ads mocking Apple for “reheating our leftovers.”

What the Market Is Telling Us About Apple Stock
The 4% bump in Apple stock suggests investors are optimistic about near-term demand, even if the Duo’s long-term positioning remains murky.
Apple has a track record of entering new categories with initial skepticism, then sharpening its message, as it did with the iPad and Apple Watch.
The Vision Pro headset, though, reminds us that not every new category translates into mass adoption.

For now, Bob O’Donnell of TECHnalysis Research summed up the near-term outlook well, calling the Duo a likely “status symbol” that will be hard to get initially.
That kind of scarcity-driven demand could support Apple stock through the holiday quarter, even as questions linger about whether the foldable format finds a bigger audience over time.
