What Happened?

Coherent (COHR) closed at $288.02 on October 12, down 7.87%, as optical stocks sold off together. Ciena (CIEN) fell 9.95%, and Lumentum (LITE) fell 9.78% in the same session. No confirmed catalyst drove the drop, and analysts offered differing explanations, including profit-taking after a long run. Coherent’s own numbers show a more specific pattern: revenue has beaten the Street in each of the last five quarters, while operating cash flow has missed in every one.

Revenue Beat Five Straight Quarters. Operating Cash Flow Missed All Five

In the June quarter, the fiscal fourth quarter of 2026, revenue of $2,045.50 million beat the Street by 3.26%, according to Coherent’s fourth-quarter results and investor relations materials. Operating cash flow came in at $69.46 million against $374.10 million expected. For the full fiscal year, GAAP net income reached $769.90 million, while operating cash flow was only $79.51 million.

Capex does not explain that gap, because operating cash flow is counted before capital spending, and TIKR’s data shows the shortfall, not its cause. Capex then widened it: the June quarter’s $555.68 million ran 88% above the Street’s $295.57 million estimate. Fiscal 2026 free cash flow reached negative $1.02 billion, and net debt ended the year at $2.06 billion, or 1.21 times EBITDA.

A $30 Billion Market Estimate That Needs Cash to Back It

At Coherent’s September 21 PhotonLink launch, CEO Jim Anderson put the existing portfolio’s 2030 addressable market at about $60 billion. He said PhotonLink “allows us to access another $30 billion of integrated optics market opportunity by the end of this decade.” That is management’s market estimate, not a revenue forecast.

Part of the payoff is already visible. Datacenter and Communications revenue grew 40.1% to $5.32 billion in fiscal 2026, and segment operating income rose 47.1% to $1.33 billion. Spending is not easing either. Beck Mason, EVP of Semiconductor Devices, said Coherent is “planning to double that again or more than double that again” for indium phosphide capacity next year.

Coherent trades at about 21 times NTM EV/EBITDA, between Fabrinet (FN) at about 20 times and Corning (GLW) at about 22 times.

TIKR’s mid case, the model’s central scenario, values Coherent at around $1,130 by June 30, 2031. That is about a 294% total return from $288.02, or around 34% a year over 4.7 years.

The target depends on earnings turning into cash. Consensus has operating cash flow rising to around $1.4 billion in fiscal 2027 and around $2.7 billion in fiscal 2028, with free cash flow turning positive in fiscal 2028. The primary risk is that cash keeps lagging revenue. On the downside, the lowest Street target was $280 as of September 30, just below the October 12 close.

Conclusion

Coherent had not announced its fiscal Q1 2027 report date as of October 13; last year’s Q1 results came on November 5. Operating cash flow is the line to watch. A beat would end a five-quarter run of misses and show earnings converting to cash, while another miss would make the revenue beats harder to trust.
