What Happened?

Lumentum Holdings (LITE) fell 9.78% on Monday, October 12, closing at $995.41. Hours earlier at a Singapore panel, Broadcom (AVGO) CEO Hock Tan said his company is overcoming wafer and memory shortages and that capital will be the biggest constraint on AI growth. For a stock priced on scarcity, the date that matters is when a second high-power laser supplier arrives. Lumentum’s management has pointed to the second half of 2027.

No company-specific catalyst drove the drop. Ciena (CIEN) fell 9.95% and Coherent (COHR) was down about 7% at midday, with no earnings release, guidance change, or analyst action behind the move. Pomegra attributed the selling to profit-taking after a multi-week rally.

Tan’s remarks were mixed. He said frontier labs Anthropic and OpenAI have shown they can generate significant revenue. Bloomberg also reported that he likened many AI investors to casino gamblers and questioned the economics of money-losing AI labs.

At the Citi Global TMT Conference on September 9, Wupen Yuen, Lumentum’s President of Global Business Units, said the company was short on EMLs (the laser chips inside high-speed transceivers) and co-packaged optics lasers alike. “So we really don’t see the laser supply-demand gap actually close within the next couple of years,” Yuen said.

He laid out three waves of new capacity, all on schedule as of September:

  • San Jose: ramps ultra-high-power lasers through 2027
  • U.K. clean room: starts in the second quarter of 2027
  • Greensboro, North Carolina: starts around mid-2028

Customer qualification timing is the biggest variable, he said. Yuen named Coherent as the only other high-power laser supplier he sees. He said customers will need it as a second source, probably in the second half of 2027, though he does not know whether Coherent will be ready.

Pricing Holds Until a Second Source Qualifies

Until then, Lumentum keeps pricing leverage. Yuen said new deals were priced at or above already-raised levels, with some capacity allocated by pricing and expedite fees. He added that continuous-wave laser yields had climbed above EML yields, pushing those margins close to EML levels.

Analysts have not reset their models. Between September 30 and October 13, TIKR shows:

  • Fiscal 2028 consensus revenue: up 2.33% to $9,909.42 million
  • Fiscal 2027: essentially flat at $6,334.36 million, 110.2% above fiscal 2026’s reported $3,014.00 million
  • Fiscal 2029: down 1.11%

The Street’s mean target of around $1,177 sits about 18% above the October 12 close, with 17 Buys, 5 Outperforms, and 4 Holds. The lowest target, $820, sits below the close.

The mid case’s return of around 328% from $995.41 plays out over about 5.7 years. Model inputs (2026 to 2036 forecast):

Growth rests on two drivers:

  • 200G-per-lane EMLs: Yuen said these exceeded 25% of the mix in September.
  • Co-packaged optics for scale-up networks: these start in the second half of 2027.

The margin driver is pricing holding as the new fabs come online. The primary risk is a qualification delay at the U.K. or Greensboro sites.

Upside comes from optical circuit switching. Kathryn Ta, Vice President of Investor Relations, said Lumentum sees upside to an $8 billion market figure it had shown about six months before the conference. Even the low case assumes revenue compounding above 33% a year, so a laser pricing reset would land below all three cases.

Conclusion

Lumentum’s investor relations materials confirm fiscal Q1 2027 results on November 5, after the close.

Guidance calls for revenue of $1,225 million to $1,275 million, against a $1,251.51 million consensus. It also calls for a non-GAAP operating margin of 39.5% to 40.5%. A print at the top of both ranges supports the pricing argument. Any sign that customers are qualifying a second high-power laser source before the second half of 2027 would challenge it.
