What Happened?

Amazon (AMZN) stock slipped 1% yesterday and another 4% today after CNBC confirmed the company trimmed jobs within its artificial intelligence group.

The cuts hit the AGI unit, which sits at the center of Amazon’s AI strategy. This team works on foundation models, semiconductors, and some quantum computing projects.

This isn’t an isolated move. It’s the latest round of layoffs since Amazon said back in January it would cut about 16,000 corporate jobs.

Since October, the company has cut more than 30,000 positions in total. So Amazon stock is reacting to a pattern of ongoing headcount reductions, not a single surprise announcement.

What makes this round notable is where the cuts landed.

  • AI is supposed to be Amazon’s biggest growth engine right now, yet the team building that technology is shrinking.
  • The company says it’s still developing its Nova family of AI models and trying to close the gap with leaders like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
  • Amazon has acknowledged its own models aren’t yet among the top performers for the toughest use cases.

At the same time, Amazon isn’t pulling back on AI spending.

The company plans to spend $200 billion on AI infrastructure this year, up more than 50% from 2025.

So while some AI jobs are being cut, the capital going into AI buildout, like data centers and chips, is actually growing.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Amazon Stock

The modest 1% drop in Amazon stock suggests investors aren’t overly alarmed, but they are paying attention.

Cutting staff inside the group responsible for building competitive AI models raises a fair question: is Amazon trimming overhead, or is it signaling something about the pace of its AI ambitions?

The layoffs fit into a broader trend across the company since the end of the pandemic, when Amazon hired aggressively and is now working to streamline.

Investors seem to be treating this as part of that larger efficiency push rather than a red flag specific to AI.

Still, the timing matters.

Cutting jobs in the AGI unit while admitting its models lag top competitors could make some investors wonder if Amazon is leaning more on capital spending and infrastructure than on in-house model talent to compete.

For now, the reaction in Amazon stock looks measured, but it’s a headline worth watching as the company balances cost discipline with its massive AI investment plans.
