Key Takeaways

  • Twist Bioscience and 10x Genomics both rose 12% today, and neither company had news of its own.
  • ICON rose 13% after its third-quarter gross bookings jumped 26.9%, and other life-science tools and pharma-services stocks rose with it.
  • Over the past year, Twist’s forward price-to-sales multiple has moved from under 4x to nearly 25x. Sentiment did most of that work.
  • The next real test is Twist’s fiscal fourth-quarter report, where management has promised breakeven adjusted EBITDA.

Twist Bioscience (TWST) stock jumped 12% today, and 10x Genomics (TXG) rose 12% right alongside it. Neither company had news to explain the move.

Twist’s only release was the launch of a new antibody-screening product. The lift came from across life-science tools and pharma services instead. ICON (ICLR) led the way, up 13% after its third-quarter report after Tuesday’s close.

ICON’s gross bookings rose 26.9% from a year earlier to $3.79 billion, a sign that drug developers are signing up for more research work. (Its revenue still slipped 2.9%.)

10x Genomics gets its own test soon: it reports its third quarter on Nov. 5.

Sentiment is doing the heavy lifting

Today’s move is last week in reverse: Twist fell 9% on Oct. 22 as AI and genomics stocks slid, also with no company news.

Those swings show up in Twist’s forward price-to-sales multiple, which went from 3.6x last November to a peak of 25x on Oct. 5.

It sat at 19x at Tuesday’s close, about double its one-year average of 9.6x. Today’s jump takes it closer to 21x.

The business has to keep up

Twist’s results have held up their end so far. Revenue rose 23% to $118.4 million in its fiscal third quarter (through June), and in August management raised its fiscal 2026 revenue guidance to $456 million to $457 million.

Analysts expect revenue to climb from $377 million in fiscal 2025 to $646 million by fiscal 2028, close to 20% a year.

The next real test is Twist’s fiscal fourth-quarter report in November. In the third-quarter release, CEO Emily Leproust said Twist continues “to expect to achieve adjusted EBITDA breakeven this quarter.” And if ICON’s bookings mean drug developers are spending again, that helps Twist too, since they’re among its customers.

My take: today’s jump is all mood. At closer to 21x forward sales, Twist needs a clean fourth quarter, breakeven included, to hold onto it. Of course, if sentiment on genomics stocks sours again before then, the multiple can give back today’s gain just as fast.
