What Happened?
Tesla (TSLA) is taking its first real step into Vietnam. The company registered a local entity, Tesla Motors Vietnam, this month, according to business registration records.
That’s usually the first move before a company starts selling cars in a new country.
But Tesla isn’t walking into an empty market.
Vietnam became Southeast Asia’s largest EV market in 2025, with sales more than doubling and EVs making up almost 40% of new car sales, according to International Energy Agency data.
Tesla’s problem is that one company already owns this market: VinFast. Backed by Vietnamese billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong’s Vingroup, VinFast controls 92% of the domestic EV market, per HSC research.
VinFast’s advantage goes well beyond just selling cars. The company has built a full ecosystem, including a charging network with more than 150,000 ports that are restricted to VinFast vehicles only, according to ASEAN analyst Supparoek Sawangwong.
It also has strong brand recognition and an affiliated electric taxi network that keeps its cars visible everywhere. Analyst Koketso Tsoai said this combination makes it tough for any outside brand, Tesla included, to compete on equal footing.
Still, the opportunity is real.
EV sales in Vietnam jumped 89% year over year in Q2 2026, according to Counterpoint Research.
Vietnam’s economy also grew 8% in 2025, with GDP per capita reaching $5,066, per World Bank data.
Rising incomes could mean more buyers looking for a premium alternative to VinFast.
Analysts expect Tesla to start with its Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV, targeting wealthier, tech-focused buyers rather than the mass market right away.
Tesla’s Shanghai factory could help supply the region.
But most analysts agree that long-term success in Vietnam would require more competitive pricing or a cheaper model down the road.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Tesla Stock
This move fits into a bigger picture for Tesla stock right now.
On the company’s most recent earnings call, Tesla reported record Q2 global deliveries, with sequential growth across every region: 60% in the Americas, 27% in APAC, and 12% in EMEA.
Model Y also set delivery records in several international markets, showing that Tesla’s global demand engine is running hot again.
For investors watching Tesla stock, a Vietnam entry wouldn’t move the needle overnight.
Tesla would be entering as a challenger in a market VinFast has dominated for 24 straight months of top sales.
But it also shows Tesla’s continued appetite for expansion in fast-growing EV markets, something that matters for the long-term growth story behind Tesla stock.
No timeline has been announced for an actual launch, and Tesla did not respond to requests for comment.
For now, this is a groundwork step, but one worth watching for anyone tracking Tesla stock’s international growth potential heading into next year.
