What Happened?

Novo Nordisk (NVO) stock dropped sharply on Monday after the company laid out new long-term goals that failed to convince investors it can hold its ground against fast-growing rivals in the weight loss drug market.

Copenhagen-listed shares closed 7.7% lower, their worst day since February.

At its Capital Markets Day in London, the Danish drugmaker said it plans to launch more than five drugs with “multi-blockbuster” potential by 2030.

It also targets over 150 billion Danish kroner, roughly $23 billion, in risk-adjusted pipeline sales by 2035.

On top of that, Novo said revenue growth between 2026 and 2030 should match big pharma peers like Eli Lilly, AstraZeneca, Amgen, Biogen, Merck, AbbVie, and Novartis.

The problem is that investors wanted more. “Investors hoped for a project ‘miracle’ that could turn the momentum around short term,” said Per Hansen, savings economist at Nordnet. “For obvious reasons that miracle does not exist.”

CEO Mike Doustdar addressed what he called the “elephant in the room” directly. Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic, loses key patent protection in the U.S. starting in 2032.

That market made up more than half of Novo’s total sales last year.

Doustdar said the company built this market and now faces nearly every pharma competitor trying to take a piece of it.

He also outlined plans to diversify beyond obesity and diabetes into new areas like blood and endocrine disorders, liver disease, and cardiovascular disease, a notable shift from the sharper focus he pushed for just last year.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Novo Nordisk Stock

Novo Nordisk stock had already fallen 27% over the past 12 months heading into Monday, while rival Eli Lilly’s stock gained 52% over the same stretch.

Lilly has grabbed a majority share of the injectable GLP-1 market with Mounjaro and Zepbound, even launching years after Novo’s own drugs hit the market.

Analysts say Monday’s targets simply don’t match what the market expects from a stock like Novo Nordisk.

“The investors, they are very particular in what they want from Novo, and this doesn’t add up to it,” said Jacob Pedersen, investment strategist at Middelfart Sparekasse.

He noted that growing in line with a broad group of pharma peers points to slower growth than what Novo Nordisk stockholders have historically counted on.

The pushback also comes after a string of clinical setbacks and leadership changes over the past year, plus last week’s news that Novo is rebranding to simply “Novo.”

For now, the market reaction to Novo Nordisk stock suggests investors need a clearer path back to growth, not just a broader one.
