What Happened?

SK Hynix (SKHY) is asking Washington for approval to send US chipmaking equipment to China.

Two people familiar with the matter told Reuters the request is tied to a bigger plan: building a factory in the US.

The Trump administration is pushing SK Hynix, Samsung and other foreign chipmakers to build plants in the US. Solidigm, SK Hynix’s US unit, wants to install new tools at its Dalian, China, site.

The goal is to make more NAND chips there. NAND powers data center storage for AI and cloud computing.

Extra output in China would help Solidigm pay for a US NAND factory. One source called it a bridge to making more chips in the US. Solidigm is also weighing an IPO as early as next year.

The US restricts exports of chip equipment to China. Last year, Commerce revoked licenses that had exempted SK Hynix and Samsung.

SK Hynix says the work is done “under authorization from the US government.” It also says it is not seeking capacity expansion at the Dalian site.

SK Hynix shares fell 11% in Seoul on Thursday amid a wider tech selloff.

What the Market Is Telling Us About SK Hynix Stock

The drop looks tied to the broader tech selloff, not just this story. Still, the news adds uncertainty. SK Hynix stock now depends on a US licensing decision out of the company’s hands.

The business backdrop is strong. On the Q2 call, SK Hynix reported revenue of KRW 79.3 trillion, up 257% from a year ago.

Operating margin hit 76%, and management also said supply is tight and expects it to stay that way for a long time.

An industry expert cited by Reuters said NAND prices are up sevenfold since mid-2023, which helps explain why SK Hynix wants more output.

But China’s YMTC has moved up to No. 3 in NAND, which adds competition.

SK Hynix is also exploring a possible lease in Ohio with Intel and has broken ground on a packaging plant in Indiana.
