What Happened?

Netflix (NFLX) named former Disney executive Peter Rice as its new chief content officer, replacing Bela Bajaria, who is leaving after nearly 10 years.

Rice starts Oct. 26, and Netflix stock changed little in extended trading Thursday.

Rice most recently ran Disney’s cable channels, news programming and coverage of major sporting events. Before that, he worked at 21st Century Fox and Fox Searchlight Pictures.

At Netflix, he will oversee scripted and unscripted series, film and live events.

Co-CEO Ted Sarandos called Rice one of the most effective at-scale operators in entertainment.

Bajaria had been focused on Netflix’s live sports strategy.

The news came a day after Netflix cut about 6% of its workforce, or roughly 1,000 jobs.

Netflix stock is now down more than 20% this year.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Netflix Stock

The market didn’t react much to the news, which suggests investors see this as a leadership change, an not a strategic shift.

Rice takes over as the company trims staff and leans harder into live events.

Content is at the heart of the business, so the role matters.

On the Q2 call, management said content spending should rise about 10% this year, faster than the 8% average of the last five years but slower than the 14% average of the past decade.

Management also said live programming will account for about 5% of content spending but expects live events to make up only 1% of viewing hours.

However, it said six of the top 10 new member sign-up days in the past five years came from live events. That is the area Rice will help shape.

The business itself looked healthy in Q2.

Management guided to 13%- 14% revenue growth for 2026, roughly $6 billion in added revenue.

Viewing hours grew 2% in the first half. Netflix also repurchased $4.7 billion in shares in Q2, its largest quarter ever.

The next test comes soon as Netflix reports earnings on Tuesday. Investors will want to hear how the new leadership and layoffs fit into Netflix’s plan.
