What Happened?
Rocket Lab (RKLB) said the first launch of its Neutron rocket is now delayed until next year, driving the stock down 6%.
The company had earlier aimed for a fourth-quarter 2026 launch. In August, it seemed to soften that goal and said it wanted to get Neutron to the launch pad in the fourth quarter.
Neutron is a reusable, medium-lift rocket central to Rocket Lab’s push for larger commercial satellite, civil space, and national security missions.
The August call hinted at this. CEO Peter Beck said the window for an end-of-year launch was “narrowing.”
He said the team was weighing first-launch timing against how quickly it can scale up, with the goal of reaching a tenth flight quickly.

There was good news last month too.
Rocket Lab signed a multi-year deal with Synspective, a Tokyo-based Earth observation company, for 20 Electron launches.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Rocket Lab Stock
Investors didn’t love the delay. Rocket Lab stock has been priced on Neutron’s arrival, so every slip matters.
Here is why it matters. Neutron is expected to drive major growth, and management said the first successful flight would be the turning point for profits.
Adjusted EBITDA should turn positive in the quarter after that flight, while free cash flow would take another 18 to 24 months to turn positive.
A later launch pushes that timeline out, and Rocket Lab stock now has to wait longer for those milestones.
The company is still burning cash. Last quarter, free cash flow was-$110.1 million. Management said spending will remain high as work on Neutron continues.
It did have about $2.4 billion in cash and investments at the end of the quarter.
Demand looks strong, though. Q2 revenue hit a record $234 million, up 62%, and backlog reached $2.36 billion.
Beck said customers were already locking in Neutron slots and said selling full-price Neutrons before the first flight has been easy.

Rocket Lab is also pursuing its pending Iridium deal, expected to close in mid-2027.
For Rocket Lab stock, the test is simple. Neutron has to fly and work. Until then, Rocket Lab stock will likely trade on launch news and cash burn.
