What Happened?

JPMorgan Chase (JPM) said it has invested $5 billion in equity in industries critical to US economic and national security, Reuters reports.

Banks are trying to cash in on rising demand for domestic manufacturing, energy infrastructure and supply-chain strength.

The bank also said it has financed about $230 billion under its Security and Resiliency Initiative, launched a year ago.

At the time, JPMorgan committed to financing $1.5 trillion of US investments over the next decade.

The equity investments are in venture, growth, and later-stage companies. New deals include next-generation defense technology, distributed battery storage, automated manufacturing and frontier technologies.

Jay Horine, who leads the initiative, said the next phase will focus on expanding industrial capacity and strengthening supply chains.

Bank of America said in August it plans to invest $250 billion by July 2027 in US digital and infrastructure projects. Morgan Stanley said it would help facilitate about $1.5 trillion of investment over the next decade.

On the Q3 earnings call, CEO Jamie Dimon said the bank now sees organic growth as the best use of its capital.

He said that is why buybacks were lower this quarter. The bank said it had about $30 billion of excess capital, and that it can redeploy that money at good returns over time.

Dimon also said the first year of the initiative was likely over $200 billion, a figure the $230 billion now confirms.
