What Happened?

GitLab (GTLB) stock jumped after the company beat expectations across the board in its second quarter results.

GitLab earned $0.24 per share, excluding items, on revenue of $286 million, well ahead of analyst estimates for $0.18 per share and $273 million. GitLab also raised its full-year guidance, citing broad-based demand and record bookings as the drivers.

The quarter showed strength on nearly every front. GitLab posted its largest gross bookings quarter in company history, with net ARR growing more than 40% year-over-year.

First order count, meaning new customers, more than doubled compared to a year ago. Net retention also improved sequentially for the first time since 2024, suggesting existing customers are spending more with GitLab over time.

William Blair responded to the results by upgrading GitLab to Market Perform from Underperform.

The firm pointed to better go-to-market execution, including increased account executive capacity, improved productivity per sales rep, stronger sales attainment, and stabilization in the smaller SMB and midmarket customer segments.

Over the trailing twelve months, GitLab’s revenue grew 24.9% to reach $1 billion, with a gross profit margin of 86.76%.

What the Market Is Telling Us About GitLab Stock

The strong reaction in GitLab stock reflects growing confidence that the company can grow beyond its traditional seat-based subscription model.

A big part of that story is Flex, a new way for customers to commit dollars that they can flexibly allocate across seats and other products each month.

In just six weeks on the market, more than 130 customers committed over $20 million to Flex, and paid consumption run rate jumped from $15 million to more than $40 million in a single quarter.

AI adoption is also becoming a real tailwind for the business, not just a talking point.

GitLab’s Duo Agent Platform saw its paid run rate grow roughly 50% quarter-over-quarter. GitLab Orbit, the company’s context graph for connecting code, issues, and pipelines, has already been enabled by more than 2,200 organizations since its beta launch in June, a 70% increase in just four weeks.

Roughly 80% of that query volume comes from customers connecting Orbit to external AI tools like Claude Code and Codex.

GTLB Stock Valuation Model (TIKR)

The core business remains healthy too.

GitLab Ultimate now makes up 59% of total ARR, and deals worth $500,000 or more grew more than 150% year over year, showing that larger customers are deepening their commitments.

Public sector demand also rebounded meaningfully after a rough stretch tied to government shutdowns.

Still, William Blair noted that after GitLab stock’s 72% surge over the past six months, shares now look overvalued relative to fair value estimates.

That tension, between genuinely improving fundamentals and a stock price that’s already run up significantly, will likely shape how investors approach GitLab stock heading into the back half of the year.
