What Happened?
General Motors (GM) laid out a new AI and software plan on Wednesday at its “GM Forward” event in Manhattan.
The aim is to build cars faster as Chinese automakers grow abroad and the U.S. market gets tougher.
For anyone following General Motors stock, the big target is cutting development time to about two years, while a traditional cycle takes four to five.
Here are the main pieces of the plan:
- More computing power: Future vehicles, EV or gas, will have 40 times the computing power and up to 50% faster cellular connectivity. The new system debuts on the $130,000 Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028.
- Better EVs: The next EVs should be 25% more aerodynamic and 15% lighter and will use LMR batteries. GM tested more than 300,000 battery designs virtually before building one prototype.
- OnStar AI: GM’s own AI assistant will launch in the coming months on the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq. It will be a paid subscription. GM currently uses Google’s Gemini.
- Eyes-off driving: GM still plans highway driving that lets drivers look away from the road by 2028.

Consulting firm AlixPartners says China brings vehicles to market twice as fast, with a 30% cost advantage.
GM also still trails Tesla on over-the-air updates and automated driving.
President Mark Reuss said GM remains committed to EVs and will be ready “when the U.S. market is ready.”

What the Market Is Telling Us About General Motors Stock
The strategy comes after a solid quarter. Revenue was a record $50 billion, and adjusted EBIT rose 22% to $4.1 billion. GM also raised its full-year free cash flow outlook to $11.5 billion to $12.5 billion.
General Motors stock is backed by a new $20 billion buyback plan, and management says it shows the board believes the shares are undervalued.
GM expects about $2 billion in full-year hits from commodity prices, logistics, and memory chips.
It says 2027 should beat 2026 if those pressures ease.

So General Motors stock is a mix of strong cash returns and rising costs.
The AI plan is a long-term bet. The payoff depends on whether GM can build faster and cheaper while Chinese rivals keep pushing.
