What Happened?
Dell (DELL) shares fell 11% on Wednesday.
Barclays cut its rating on Dell, HPE and NetApp to the equivalent of a hold from buy. The bank pointed to the big run-up and the timing of enterprise AI spending as reasons for the downgrade.
Barclays says it hasn’t seen a “meaningful AI inflection” in enterprise spending and expects the strong revenue is mostly about memory.
A global memory shortage has pushed higher memory prices onto customers.
The bank also found that businesses put only about 5% of their IT budgets into AI and only about a quarter of enterprise AI spend goes to hardware.
If memory prices level off or fall, infrastructure revenue could take a hit.
Dell’s own numbers are strong. Last quarter, revenue rose 58% to $47 billion, and earnings per share jumped 203% to $7.04.
AI orders reached a record $60.9 billion, and the AI backlog stood at $95 billion. Dell raised its full-year revenue guidance to $192 billion.

Dell’s Jeff Clarke did admit that prices play a role. On the call, he said, “There’s a notion of inflation inside our growth.” He also said demand for traditional servers exceeded what Dell could supply.
The pain spread beyond Dell as shares of HPE, Oracle, and Super Micro fell. Oracle dropped 9% and is now down 33% for the year. CoreWeave fell 15%, wiping out its 2026 gains.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Dell Technologies Stock
Investors are asking a simple question. Is this real AI demand, or is it higher prices?
Dell Technologies stock is up almost 300% this year. HPE has gained about 160%, and NetApp has doubled. After runs like that, even a small doubt can cause a sharp drop.
Other worries are piling on. Revenue figures from OpenAI have been concerning. Rising interest rates also matter, because so much of the AI buildout depends on debt.
Memory stocks are under pressure too. China’s CXMT reported progress on a new chip structure over the weekend.
Micron is down 11% for the week, SK Hynix has fallen 13%, and Western Digital is down more than 8%. Memory is a cyclical business, so investors are nervous.

For Dell Technologies stock, the key issue is how much growth comes from real demand and how much comes from price increases.
Dell says its pipeline keeps growing and its traditional server business has more room to run. Barclays isn’t convinced yet.
Investors will now watch memory prices and enterprise AI spending closely. Those two things will likely decide where Dell Technologies stock goes next.
