Key Takeaways

  • Astera Labs guided Q3 revenue to $540 million to $560 million, about 40% above Q2’s record $392.4 million at the midpoint.
  • CEO Jitendra Mohan said Scorpio’s ramp marks Astera’s evolution into “a complete AI fabric infrastructure provider.”
  • Shares sit 42% below their $499 high, with gross margin guided down to about 72% and directors selling stock.
  • The November 3 Q3 report should confirm the Scorpio X-Series ramp and Aries 7 sampling plans.

Astera Labs (ALAB) handed Wall Street a Q3 forecast far above consensus. The stock has spent the months since trying to decide how much to believe it.

Shares closed at $290 on October 21, up 1.9% on the day and 51.1% over six months. They still sit 42% below the 52-week high of $499.

Trading has been choppy since the company’s Nasdaq-100 debut in June. Now the guide is on the table, and November 3 is when investors see whether Scorpio lands on schedule.

A guide that outran the Street

Q2 revenue rose 27% sequentially and 104% year over year to a record $392.4 million, beating the roughly $361 million consensus. Non-GAAP EPS of $0.80 topped the $0.69 estimate, and GAAP net income more than doubled to $153.1 million.

Then came the Q3 outlook:

  • Revenue of $540 million to $560 million, about 40% sequential growth at the midpoint.
  • Non-GAAP EPS of $1.16 to $1.21.
  • Non-GAAP gross margin of about 72%, down from 73.7%.

Scorpio X-Series 320-lane fabric switches entering volume production drive the jump, alongside Aries PCIe 6 retimers and early Taurus 800G shipments. Mohan said Scorpio will become the largest product family a quarter early, marking the company’s evolution into “a complete AI fabric infrastructure provider.”

Can annual estimates keep pace?

Astera Labs (ALAB): revenue, actual and consensus estimates, $ millions, fiscal 2023–2028 (TIKR)

Every forward number now hinges on Scorpio volumes holding up through 2027.

Wiring the multi-rack era

Aries 7 is next: PCIe 7 retimers, redrivers, cable modules and optical parts spanning copper and optics. Sampling to select hyperscale, OEM and NPO customers starts in Q4, with broader availability after qualification.

Those parts target 128 GT/s links that stretch across racks, which is where large AI clusters are heading.

Astera also won a connectivity role in d-Matrix’s NVLink Fusion rack, built on the MGX design from Nvidia (NVDA). That system isn’t due until Q4 2027, so the payoff is years out.

Funding a roadmap this wide costs real money.

Astera Labs (ALAB): R&D expense, quarterly, $ millions, Q2 2024–Q2 2026 (TIKR)

R&D keeps climbing, yet GAAP operating margin still reached 22.7% in Q2.

A premium that looks easier to defend

Astera trades at 51.6x forward earnings and 18.7x forward EV/sales. Navitas Semiconductor (NVTS), with a sliver of the revenue and deep losses, trades at 29.9x forward sales.

The risks sit elsewhere. Gross margin is set to slip as switch and module sales grow. Customer concentration is high, and the jump from PCIe 6 to PCIe 7 shortens each product’s window.

Insiders have been selling, too. Director Manuel Alba reported $50.3 million of sales in September, and director Stefan Dyckerhoff sold $4.5 million in October.

The multiple has come a long way this year…

Astera Labs (ALAB): forward (NTM) P/E, last 2 years (TIKR)

At 51.6x, the stock depends on Scorpio turning into the $1.16 to $1.21 of quarterly EPS that management guided. The $388 average analyst target implies about 34% upside.

My take: Astera is executing as well as any AI chip company right now, and the pullback has made the valuation reasonable for this growth rate. The risk I’d watch most is concentration, since one hyperscaler pausing orders could dent a quarter badly. I’d build a position gradually and let Q3 confirm the ramp.

Astera reports Q3 on November 3. Revenue near $550 million with gross margin around 72% would confirm the Scorpio story, while a shortfall would test the market’s patience quickly.
