Key Takeaways

  • Apple will launch its first Apple Intelligence features in mainland China with iOS 27.3 in December, with Alibaba’s Qwen inside Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence and Baidu also building features for Chinese users.
  • The new Siri AI isn’t part of China’s first wave, and only the iPhone 15 Pro and newer qualify.
  • Apple’s Greater China revenue reached $64.85 billion in the first nine months of fiscal 2026, more than all of fiscal 2025, even though Apple Intelligence wasn’t available there. That makes the launch more about closing a feature gap with Huawei than rescuing demand.
  • For Alibaba, the deal adds reach rather than revenue: Qwen access runs through a free sign-in, putting the model in front of iPhone users without the marketing spend behind its Qwen app.

Apple (AAPL) confirmed on October 31 that its first Apple Intelligence features will reach mainland China with iOS 27.3 in December, with developer testing starting November 4. Alibaba (BABA) is the headline partner: its Qwen model will sit inside Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence, reached through a Qwen account or Sign in with Apple. Baidu (BIDU) is the other local partner. It confirmed to TechCrunch in July that it is building Apple Intelligence features for Chinese users, though its role in the December release hasn’t been spelled out.

The announcement confirms a timeline Bloomberg first reported on October 14. It’s also a first wave, not the full rollout: the new Siri AI Apple showed at WWDC 2026 isn’t included, and neither is Image Playground. Only the iPhone 15 Pro and newer qualify.

Apple’s China Rebound Came Without AI

The bull case leans on Tim Cook’s own words. On the January 2025 earnings call, he said iPhone 16 sales were stronger “in markets where we have rolled out Apple Intelligence.” China was the weak spot then. Greater China revenue fell in three of the four quarters of fiscal 2025, ending at $14.49 billion in the September quarter, down 4%.

Then it turned, with no Apple Intelligence at all. Greater China grew 38% to $25.53 billion in the December quarter, 28% to $20.50 billion in March and 22% to $18.82 billion in June. That’s $64.85 billion in nine months, already more than the $64.37 billion Apple booked in all of fiscal 2025. The 10-Q credits the iPhone.

So December closes a feature gap with Huawei. It doesn’t rescue a slump.

What the Street Already Expects

Analysts see Apple’s revenue reaching $477.64 billion in fiscal 2026, about 15% above last year. They expect growth to slow to 10% in fiscal 2027 ($524.75 billion) and 9% in fiscal 2028 ($571.65 billion).

China AI alone won’t move those numbers much. A full year of Greater China at this year’s pace is about $86 billion. Five extra points of growth on that adds roughly $4 billion, under 1% of fiscal 2027 revenue.

The bigger lever is upgrades. Owners of anything older than an iPhone 15 Pro need a new phone to get these features. That’s the demand case, and it’s also why the missing Siri AI matters: the feature Apple is selling hardest elsewhere isn’t in China’s first wave.

Alibaba Gets Distribution, Not a Bill

Alibaba’s Cloud Intelligence Group brought in $6.03 billion in the March 2026 quarter, up 45% from a year earlier, and $22.47 billion over four quarters.

The Apple deal doesn’t add to that directly. Qwen access runs through a free sign-in, and Alibaba said user requests won’t be used to train its models. What Alibaba gets is reach. Its AI Labs and Applications segment posted an RMB 13.9 billion (about $2 billion) adjusted EBITDA loss in the June quarter, partly from marketing the Qwen app. A Qwen button inside Siri on every recent iPhone in China is cheaper user acquisition than anything Alibaba can buy.

Apple’s China Number Lands Tonight

Apple reports fiscal fourth-quarter results after the close today, November 2. It’s the first report under CEO John Ternus. The comparison is easy: $14.49 billion, down 4%.

The December quarter is where this launch counts, and it’s Apple’s hardest China comparison. Last year’s $25.53 billion came on a 38% jump. For iPhone demand, the AI launch looks like a modest help rather than a new growth leg. It matters more for Alibaba. What settles the Apple side is whether Ternus guides Greater China to growth against that $25.53 billion.
