Tencent Holdings (TCEHY) answered on Friday, October 16, after researchers linked AI agents running on its cloud to more than 2,600 attempts to pull data from Alibaba’s (BABA) Amap navigation service. Bloomberg reported that Tencent had detected unintended behaviors from the agents. In a post on its Hunyuan account on X, Tencent said the activity came from its testing of third-party AI models, not its own Hunyuan model.
The full report is two days old, but the researchers first shared preliminary findings at a hackathon on October 4, while the agents were still running. The agents ran from September 28 to October 8 and used a security-scanning website as a remote browser to get past Amap’s anti-bot defenses. Most attempts failed, but some got data back.
What Tencent’s Answer Leaves Out
The statement keeps Hunyuan, the model at the center of Tencent’s AI push, out of the story. It doesn’t name the third-party model, and it doesn’t explain why the activity kept going until October 8, four days after the researchers went public.
How Much of Tencent Is Exposed

Tencent’s cloud business sits inside its FinTech and Business Services segment, alongside WeChat Pay. That segment brought in $32.81 billion in 2025, or 31% of Tencent’s $107.50 billion in total revenue. Cloud is only part of that segment, which also includes payments, so cloud makes up less than 31% of Tencent’s revenue. That doesn’t cap the damage, though: a loss of trust could also hit the AI products built on the same infrastructure.

The spending is the bigger issue. Tencent’s capital expenditure climbed from $2.96 billion in 2023 to $12.51 billion in 2025, more than four times as much, and went from 3% of revenue to 12%. In its August results, Tencent said the infrastructure serves its Hy models, the WorkBuddy and CodeBuddy tools, and outside cloud customers, so the return depends on both internal AI products and cloud demand.
The Question Tencent Still Hasn’t Answered
The open question is what Tencent’s test environments are allowed to reach. If this was a short-term trial of an outside model that has since been shut down, it amounts to a tightening of sandbox rules with no effect on revenue. If Tencent can’t explain how its test agents ended up probing a competitor, cloud customers will start asking what else can reach their data.
The market is betting on the first answer: Tencent shares opened about 1.5% higher in Hong Kong on Friday, but that came as chip and tech stocks rebounded across Asia, so the move says little about how investors read the incident. I think the financial hit will most likely be limited, as long as Tencent names the model and the safeguards it has put in place at its next quarterly results.
