What Happened?
SoftBank (SFTB.Y) stock surged nearly 5% on Friday, extending a massive two-day rally that added over $61 billion in market value.
- The move follows Nvidia’s blockbuster earnings report, which sent AI-related stocks sharply higher across the board. Two holdings are driving most of the excitement.
- First, Arm Holdings — in which SoftBank owns a majority stake — jumped more than 16% on Friday after gaining 15% the day before. ARM’s chip designs are widely used in AI servers and data centers, making it a direct beneficiary of the AI infrastructure boom Nvidia just confirmed.
- Second, OpenAI. SoftBank has invested more than $30 billion into the ChatGPT maker and booked roughly $45 billion in related gains in its most recent fiscal year. OpenAI is reportedly moving toward an IPO, which could unlock significant additional value for SoftBank.

The combination of Arm’s rally and OpenAI IPO speculation is a powerful short-term catalyst for SoftBank stock.

What the Market Is Telling Us About SoftBank Group Stock
SoftBank stock is essentially a leveraged bet on AI. It holds a controlling stake in Arm, a massive position in OpenAI, and is building data centers through its SB Energy unit in the U.S.
That includes a 10-gigawatt campus in Ohio — a project so large it exceeds the combined installed data center power capacity of the U.K., Japan, and South Korea.
The recent results support the narrative. SoftBank just reported record annual net income of over JPY 5 trillion — believed to be the highest profit ever recorded by a Japanese company. Net asset value hit a record JPY 47.7 trillion on a pro forma basis as of mid-May.
That said, investors should be aware of the holding company discount. UBP’s Vey Sern Ling cautioned that SoftBank shareholders “rarely receive the full value of the underlying assets” because of how holding companies are typically valued.
That’s a real structural consideration, even if the short-term momentum is strong.

Still, for investors wanting exposure to the AI chip boom and OpenAI’s potential IPO, SoftBank stock offers a unique combination. As Rolf Bulk of Futurum Group put it, it provides “early exposure to the OpenAI IPO” and access to “the fastest growing segment in AI semis.”
