What Happened?
Doximity (DOCS) stock almost doubled at one point in overnight trading on Thursday, 6th August, after CEO Jeffrey Tangney dropped a striking number on the company’s earnings call. He said the company’s new AI search tool is bringing in 10 times what it costs to run.
“We’re earning more than 10 times per search in revenue than it costs,” Tangney told investors on the call.
By the time the market opened, gains had cooled off, but Doximity stock still closed up 33% on Friday. That’s the stock’s best single day in over a year.
The excitement wasn’t just about margins.
- Doximity also posted Q1 revenue of $156.6 million and adjusted EBITDA of $74.8 million, both ahead of what analysts expected.
- The company also raised its full-year revenue guidance by $6 million, pushing the range to between $671 million and $681 million.
- Analysts pointed out that the raised guidance barely reflects the AI upside investors are now excited about.
- Piper Sandler’s Jessica Tassan wrote that management appears to be taking a conservative approach to AI search revenue in its outlook.
Short sellers likely piled fuel onto the fire, too. About 17% of shares available for trading were sold short heading into earnings, so as those bets got squeezed, it added extra momentum to Doximity stock’s climb.

But the rally didn’t last. Days later, Wells Fargo turned bearish, downgrading Doximity stock from equal weight to underweight.
Analyst Stan Berenshteyn set an $18 price target, implying a roughly 34% slide from last week’s closing price. He argued that Doximity now trades more in line with faster-growing peers, so further gains depend heavily on an AI story that’s still hard to put into hard numbers.
Shares slipped more than 6% on Monday as some of that enthusiasm faded.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Doximity Stock
The initial spike shows just how hungry investors are for proof that AI tools can actually make money, not just attract usage.
Doximity’s 10x return-on-cost claim gave them exactly that. But the quick reversal and Wells Fargo’s downgrade suggest the market isn’t fully convinced the AI story can be translated into real, trackable growth just yet.

For now, Doximity stock remains a battleground between believers in its AI margin story and skeptics waiting for the numbers to catch up with the hype.
