What Happened?
Boeing (BA) stock has been sliding since Friday, and shares were down nearly 1% again on Monday morning. The trigger was news that the U.S. Army is temporarily grounding its Apache helicopter fleet following a fatal crash.
The accident happened on August 14 near Fort Hood in Salado, Texas, and killed two soldiers. The Army confirmed the decision in a statement, saying: “Army leaders directed a temporary stand-down of AH-64 Apache training flight operations. The stand-down will remain in effect until we have a better understanding of the root cause of the accident.”
That uncertainty is weighing on Boeing stock.
By August 18, shares were quoted around $226.30, down more than 2% as part of a broader pullback across major indices, though Boeing was singled out among industrials facing fresh operational pressure. The stock has now pulled back roughly 12% from its 52-week high of $254, even though it’s still up sharply from its 52-week low.
Trading volume also picked up, with about 5.02 million shares changing hands versus a recent daily average of 4.62 million. That’s a sign investors are paying closer attention to Boeing stock as the Apache investigation unfolds.

Not every headline this week has been negative, though. Boeing also picked up a real win on the commercial side. The company received an amended type certificate from the FAA for its 737-7 aircraft, clearing it for commercial service after years of testing and review.
That approval matters because it lets airlines start taking delivery of the plane, and it shifts Boeing’s backlog toward higher-margin variants. It’s a helpful counterweight to the Apache news, since it supports Boeing’s core commercial business heading into the back half of the year.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Boeing Stock
The market’s reaction suggests investors are treating the Apache grounding as a real, if contained, concern rather than a minor blip. Defense platform issues tend to raise questions about reputational risk and potential program delays, and that’s clearly part of what’s pressuring Boeing stock this week.
At the same time, the stock still trades at a steep valuation, with a trailing P/E above 100, which means the market is pricing in a lot of future improvement rather than current profitability. Analysts, however, remain broadly positive.
The average price target of around $275 implies more than 23% upside from current levels, suggesting Wall Street still expects Boeing to work through near-term headwinds like the Apache stand-down.

For now, Boeing stock looks caught between two stories: a defense-side investigation creating short-term uncertainty, and steady commercial certification progress that keeps the longer-term turnaround narrative intact.
