What Happened?

Demis Hassabis, co-founder and chair of Google DeepMind, warned that recent AI agent hacks are “early warning shots.”

Hassabis is also chief scientist at Alphabet (GOOGL), and he spoke at an AI summit in Dublin on Wednesday.

He explained that today’s AI systems aren’t that powerful yet, so the incidents aren’t that big. But that could change over time.

He said they could become major incidents over the next year or two if the industry doesn’t do more to secure these systems.

Recent examples include AI agents hacking corporate networks. Anthropic also disclosed that one of its AI models sent police a false homicide tip.

Hassabis said there is “a lot of work to do” and pointed to fields like biology and the nuclear sector, which have strong safety practices.

He said AI will eventually need some kind of international standards body.

He also wants it to stay flexible, as rules should match the risks and change quickly as the technology moves, so they don’t stifle innovation.

Microsoft President Brad Smith called 2026 a “sobering year.” He said new AI safety laws are urgently needed, and that the industry’s “allergy” to regulation needs to end.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Alphabet Stock

This news is a warning, not a financial event. It doesn’t change Alphabet’s numbers, but it matters for Alphabet stock because AI is now central to the business.

Here is how Alphabet’s AI business looked last quarter.

  • Revenue grew 24% to $119.8 billion.
  • Cloud revenue jumped 82% to $24.8 billion.
  • Cloud backlog reached $514 billion.
  • The Gemini app has 950 million monthly active users.

CEO Sundar Pichai said 90% of Fortune 100 companies use Google Cloud Security.

The company also launched a new cyber model, Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber. It pairs with a tool called CodeMender that finds and fixes vulnerabilities.

Alphabet is also rolling out Google AI Threat Defense to help customers fight AI threats.

So the risk Hassabis describes could also be a business opportunity. Demand for AI security could rise, and rules could also raise costs for AI companies.

GOOGL Stock Valuation Model (TIKR)

The spending is large too. Alphabet raised its 2026 capex guidance to $195 billion-$205 billion, while free cash flow was-$5.9 billion last quarter.

For Alphabet stock, the key question is whether AI growth outruns the risks.

Investors will watch for new rules and for any major incidents. Both could shape Alphabet stock in the months ahead.
