What Happened?
Albemarle (ALB) stock led the S&P 500 lower on Tuesday, dropping 8.4% as lithium prices in China collapsed on concerns about weakening demand.
The most-active lithium carbonate contract on the Guangzhou Futures Exchange plunged roughly 13% per metric ton.
The selloff came after several Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers reported disappointing February sales figures.
Industry leader BYD saw EV sales crash by more than 40% year-over-year in the month, raising fresh concerns about lithium demand, a key component in EV batteries.

Adding to investor anxiety, escalating tensions in the Middle East clouded the global economic outlook.
The combination of weaker EV sales data and geopolitical uncertainty reversed recent momentum in lithium prices, which had been rallying following Zimbabwe’s suspension of lithium concentrate and raw mineral exports.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Albemarle Stock
The sharp drop in Albemarle stock suggests investors are worried that the recent recovery in lithium prices may be short-lived.
Despite the company’s strong Q4 earnings report last week, which beat expectations and showed improved margins, the market is focused on near-term demand headwinds.
During its earnings call, Albemarle reported net sales of $1.4 billion, up 16% year-over-year, and announced plans to idle its Kemerton lithium hydroxide plant in Western Australia to improve financial flexibility.
The company also raised its 2030 lithium demand forecast by 10%, driven by stronger-than-expected growth in stationary energy storage.

However, today’s price action shows the market remains skeptical about near-term demand, particularly from the crucial Chinese EV market.
Albemarle stock has been volatile as investors try to gauge whether recent improvements in lithium pricing can be sustained amid uncertain demand conditions.
