Amazon started in 1994 as an online bookstore, built by Jeff Bezos in a garage in Seattle with a straightforward idea: sell books on the internet.

Three decades later, Amazon runs one of the world’s largest e-commerce platforms, dominates cloud computing through AWS, streams video content, and operates logistics networks across continents. The company now generates over $600 billion in annual revenue and employs more than 1.5 million people globally.

What makes the story interesting for investors is that while Amazon’s team built the business, thousands of shareholders created wealth by simply holding the stock. A $10,000 investment at the 1997 IPO would be worth millions today. Passive ownership compounded alongside Amazon’s growth, rewarding patience through multiple business cycles and expansions into new markets.

Today, Amazon trades around $238 per share with a market capitalization of approximately $2.4 trillion, making it one of the most valuable companies in the world. The stock is held by a mix of index funds, active managers, hedge funds, and retail investors, each with different views on valuation, growth, and risk.

Understanding who owns Amazon and how that ownership is shifting can reveal where conviction lies and where it might be fading. This article breaks down who holds the stock today.

Recent Insider Transactions:

What Insider Transactions Mean

An insider is either a company officer, a member of the Board of Directors, or someone who owns more than 10% of the company’s shares. Officers include upper management like CEOs, CFOs, and COOs.

At Amazon, insiders consist of company officers and board members. No individual owns more than 10% of the company.

Insiders are legally required to report their trades to the SEC within two business days. These filings create a public record that investors can use to track whether the people closest to the business are buying or selling shares.

Is Insider Selling Always a Bad Sign?

Jeff Bezos and other Amazon insiders have been selling shares recently. Does that mean Amazon is a bad investment? Not necessarily.

Insiders sell for many reasons. Sometimes it reflects concerns about valuation or business performance. More often, it reflects personal financial planning, tax management, or portfolio diversification.

As Peter Lynch pointed out, insiders might sell for any number of reasons, but they buy for only one: they believe the price will rise.

Insider buying tends to be a stronger signal than selling. Sales require context. Purchases are usually straightforward.

Should You Only Buy Stocks With Insider Buying?

Insider buying is a positive signal, but it is not required for making an investment.

Many strong companies see little insider buying simply because executives already own significant equity through compensation. Others perform well even as insiders trim positions after years of gains.

Tracking insider transactions is one part of a broader analysis. It works best when combined with financials, valuation, and business fundamentals.

  • Senior Vice President, Chief Global Affairs & Legal Officer | David A. Zapolsky: Owns 121,360 Amazon shares worth $27.9 million, representing 0.00% of Amazon’s outstanding shares. Zapolsky joined Amazon in 1999 as Associate General Counsel for Litigation and Regulatory matters and was promoted to Vice President in April 2002.

TIKR Takeaway:

Jeff Bezos has been trimming his stake in Amazon, selling over 10 million shares in July.

On the hedge fund side, Skye Global Management has over 31% of its portfolio in Amazon, signaling high conviction.
