What Happened?
StubHub (STUB) stock dropped 20% in after-hours trading on Wednesday after the company’s earnings missed expectations, even though revenue hit a record high.
- StubHub posted adjusted earnings per share of $0.02 for the quarter ended June 30, well short of the $0.07 that analysts were expecting.
- The revenue picture actually looked strong.
- Revenue climbed 33% year-over-year to a record $573.1 million, up from $430.3 million a year earlier.
- Gross Merchandise Sales, which measures the total value of tickets sold on the platform, jumped 34% to $3.1 billion from $2.3 billion.
- Adjusted EBITDA nearly doubled, rising 94% to $105.7 million, giving StubHub an 18% margin compared to $54.3 million in the same quarter last year.
So why did StubHub stock fall despite these numbers?
The earnings miss came down to costs eating into profitability, even as the top line grew. Gross margin came in slightly compressed during the quarter.
That compression stemmed largely from the World Cup, a massive event that ran over 75 matches in just two and a half weeks.
StubHub chose to increase spending on customer support and fulfillment to handle the scale and complexity of the tournament, and that spending weighed on margins even as it helped deliver a record quarter.
Net income for the quarter was $14.6 million, a big turnaround from a net loss of $53.8 million in the same period last year. Free cash flow also improved dramatically, reaching $309.7 million versus just $9.7 million a year earlier.
The company kept working on its balance sheet too. StubHub reduced debt by $200 million so far this year, including a $100 million payment in May and another $100 million in July.
Net leverage improved to 3.0 times trailing 12-month adjusted EBITDA as of June 30, down from 4.5 times at the end of 2025.

Looking ahead, StubHub raised its full-year Gross Merchandise Sales outlook to a range of $10.1 billion to $10.3 billion. The company kept its adjusted EBITDA guidance unchanged at $400 million to $420 million, with a midpoint of $410 million.
Notably, StubHub did not provide specific EPS guidance for the Q3 or the full year, which may have added to investor uncertainty.
CEO Eric Baker pointed to the World Cup as a highlight of the quarter, calling it record-setting and a sign of strong demand for live events. He said the results reflect the company’s leadership position in ticket resale and its ability to serve fans at scale.

What the Market Is Telling Us About StubHub Stock
The sharp drop in StubHub stock suggests investors were focused more on the bottom line than the top line this time.
A record revenue quarter wasn’t enough to offset an earnings per share number that came in flat against expectations for meaningful profit.

The lack of forward EPS guidance likely added to the market’s caution, since investors are left without a clear signal on how margins will trend from here.
For now, the reaction shows that StubHub stock is being judged less on growth and more on how efficiently that growth turns into profit.
