What Happened?

Intel (INTC) stock is under pressure after Northland Capital Markets downgraded shares from Outperform to Market Perform. Analyst Gus Richard also suspended the firm’s price target on the stock.

  • The downgrade follows a remarkable run. Intel stock has surged nearly 500% over the past year, driven by investor optimism around the company’s turnaround and growing demand for server CPUs.
  • That rally, according to Northland, has pushed the stock into overvalued territory.
  • Richard’s core concern isn’t Intel’s business — it’s the price.
  • He acknowledged real progress in the company’s recovery, but argued the current share price already reflects most of the expected improvement. In other words, the good news may already be priced in.

Looking further out, Northland flagged a potential slowdown in data center spending in 2027.

The worry is that large cloud companies could face tighter budgets, which could cool AI infrastructure investment across the board.

Even in an optimistic scenario in which Intel’s data center business grows 40% that year, the stock would still trade at around 38 times projected earnings — a multiple Northland considers steep.

What the Market Is Telling Us About Intel Stock

Intel stock’s valuation metrics are drawing scrutiny beyond just one analyst.

The company’s enterprise value-to-EBITDA ratio sits around 43.7 times, a level that signals investors are paying a significant premium relative to current earnings.

The broader Wall Street picture is cautious. Of 38 analysts tracked by TipRanks, 25 recommend holding the stock, 10 say buy, and three say sell. The average 12-month price target is $86.94 — implying roughly 27% downside from current levels.

That said, Intel’s Q1 2026 results were genuinely strong.

  • Revenue came in at $13.6 billion, well above guidance.
  • Data center revenue grew 22% year-over-year, and
  • CEO Lip-Bu Tan pointed to accelerating demand for CPUs as AI workloads shift toward inference and agentic computing.
  • The company also beat on earnings per share and raised its Q2 revenue outlook.

The tension here is real. Intel’s fundamentals are improving, but Intel stock has moved fast — perhaps faster than the underlying business can justify right now.

Investors may need to decide whether to stay patient or wait for a better entry point.
