Key Takeaways
- General Motors stock rose 12% in a week to a 52-week high, as Ford’s raised outlook and the midterm results sent investors toward Detroit and away from Tesla.
- Consensus estimates have GM’s normalized EPS rising to $16.10 in 2028, from $10.60 in 2025, mostly on buybacks.
- GM still looks like a buy near its five-year average forward P/E, and its 2027 outlook in late January will show whether the run can last.
General Motors (GM) stock gained 12% in the week to its Nov. 4 close of $92.43, a fresh 52-week high, while the Nasdaq-100 lost nearly 5%.
Ford (F) lifted the floor of its 2026 profit guidance on Oct. 28, and GM rose the next day. Then Democrats won both chambers of Congress on Nov. 3. On Nov. 4, GM jumped 4.6%, and Ford also rose, while Tesla (TSLA) fell 3.3%.
Ford gave Detroit a lift
Ford raised the bottom of its 2026 adjusted EBIT range to $10.5 billion, even with commodity costs nearing $2.5 billion. But it expects 2027 profit to be roughly flat, and GM faces the same squeeze. CFO Paul Jacobson told analysts that if commodity inflation since July were simply annualized, it “would result in a total headwind for 2027 of roughly $2 billion.”
Investors swapped Tesla for Detroit
Before the vote, Vikram Rai of First New York told Bloomberg that Tesla and SpaceX “have major headline risk if we get a blue sweep,” since empowered Democrats may be able to slow a merger of the two. Talks on that deal remain exploratory.
Detroit, meanwhile, sided with the administration. On Nov. 2, an industry group that includes GM and Ford backed the Trump administration in court over its cut to the 2031 fuel economy target, to 34.9 miles per gallon from 50.4, Reuters reported. Undoing that rollback through Congress would take the White House’s signature or a veto-proof majority.
Plus: GM’s listing moves to Nasdaq on Nov. 17, a switch that could make it eligible for the Nasdaq-100.

Still cheap at the high
Analysts expect normalized net income near $12 billion through 2028, so the EPS growth comes from buybacks. GM’s share count fell to 849 million on Sept. 30 from 1.2 billion at the end of 2023, and its board added a $20 billion authorization in October:

Nothing this week should move those estimates.
GM traded at 6.4x forward earnings on Nov. 2, a bit above its five-year average of 5.8x and well below its 10.8x peak in 2021:

The $101 consensus target is about 9% above the Nov. 4 close.
Room to run, at least until January
At around 6x earnings, GM doesn’t need a tech multiple for its buyback math to work: at the Nov. 4 close, $20 billion would retire about a quarter of its shares. The stock still looks like a buy. If truck profits have peaked, though, those buybacks will look pricey.
GM plans to give its 2027 outlook with fourth-quarter results in late January. If it guides to profit growth despite the roughly $2 billion cost hit, the run can keep going. If it still needs cheaper steel and copper to grow, expect the stock to stall near 6x.
