Key Takeaways

  • Fervo Energy stock lost 36% in the past month after Morpheus Research published a short report alleging problems at its geothermal plants.
  • Fervo calls the report a selective reading of early pilot data, and its first Cape Station GeoBlock is producing 33 MW under its power contract.
  • RBC and JPMorgan cut their targets but kept their ratings, and Morgan Stanley initiated coverage at Overweight with a $23 target.
  • Fervo reports third-quarter results on Nov. 9, and Cape Station’s output and transmission are what to watch.

Fervo Energy (FRVO) said on Oct. 1 that its first geothermal plant at Cape Station in Utah had reached commercial operation, a day ahead of its contract date. Five days later, a short seller went after the technology behind it, and the stock has lost 36% in the past month.

Wall Street is sticking with it, though. Morgan Stanley’s Devin McDermott initiated coverage on Oct. 29 with an Overweight rating and a $23 target, 150% above the stock’s current price.

Morpheus says Fervo hid its problems

On Oct. 6, Morpheus Research published a 50-page short report alleging that Fervo hid problems at its plants: production temperatures that fall early and vary, heavy water loss, equipment damaged by earthquakes, limited transmission capacity and rising costs. It also alleges Fervo showed investors altered data, including in its IPO filing.

Fervo told Heatmap News it was “carefully reviewing the claims,” which it said “reflect a short seller’s selective and outcome-driven characterizations of early-stage pilot data.”

The geothermal insiders Heatmap spoke to largely agreed that Morpheus took the known unknowns of a young technology and presented them as a cover-up. Water loss is a live debate, though: experts disagree on whether the water that leaves Fervo’s system flows back to the aquifer it draws from.

The report goes after the ramp analysts expect as Cape Station comes online. Their estimates have revenue going from about $6 million in 2026 to $501 million in 2029.

Those are the estimates as of Oct. 29, more than three weeks after the report, so analysts still expect the ramp.

Analysts cut their targets and kept their ratings

RBC cut its target to $36 from $46 on Oct. 9. JPMorgan cut its target to $27 from $38 on Oct. 19 and took Fervo off its Analyst Focus List. Both kept their bullish ratings.

The consensus target has come down from its June high of $46.83 to $34.07. That’s still about four times Monday’s close.

Power stocks had a rough month too, with Oklo down 35%, Bloom Energy down 26% and the Nasdaq 100 down 8%. Fervo fell further than all of them, and the short report is the reason that belongs to Fervo alone.

Nov. 9 is Fervo’s chance to answer

Fervo reports third-quarter results on Nov. 9, its first report since Cape Station went commercial. It has also invited investors to an open house at the site. It already has more than 1 gigawatt of binding power purchase agreements signed, so the job now is delivering on them. These are the numbers to watch:

  • Whether the first GeoBlock is holding its 33 MW of net power, the most direct answer to the temperature claims
  • Whether the other two Phase I GeoBlocks are still on track for commercial operation by Jan. 1, 2027
  • What Fervo says about transmission and costs for Phase II, another 400 MW due in 2028

Transmission matters most, since Fervo itself warned of a temporary shutdown tied to transmission on its second-quarter call in August.

Even the Street’s lowest target, $16, is nearly double Monday’s close, so the market is pricing Fervo as though Morpheus is right. I think that’s too gloomy for a company whose first plant is already selling power under contract. Morgan Stanley’s $23 only needs Cape Station to run the way Fervo says it does. That makes Fervo a speculative buy for investors who can live with big swings.

Of course, if Nov. 9 shows output slipping or new transmission trouble, even $23 will look generous.
