Apple (AAPL) opened preorders for its first foldable, the $1,999 iPhone Duo, on Friday, October 16, and shipping estimates slipped into January within minutes. By about 8:30 a.m. ET, every U.S. configuration showed a January 25 delivery date, with some buyers seeing January 29. In-store pickup for the October 23 launch disappeared too.
That reads like a blowout. It’s harder to size than it looks.
A Ship Date Measures Two Things
A delivery date is where demand meets supply, and Apple hasn’t said how many Duos it had to sell. The supply side was thin going in. Nikkei Asia reported in September that early output was running at only a “few hundred” units a day as Apple held the line on quality. Analyst Jeff Pu then cut his 2026 Duo shipment estimate from 7 million to 6 million units, blaming the hinge rather than demand.
A sellout proves people want the phone. It doesn’t tell you how many Apple can sell.
What 6 Million Duos Would Mean for Apple

Take Pu’s 6 million units at the $1,999 starting price and you get about $12 billion. That’s roughly 6% of the $209.6 billion Apple made from iPhone in fiscal 2025, a line that grew just 4.5% in total over the prior two years.

The sharper comparison is with what the Street already expects. Consensus has revenue rising from $478 billion in fiscal 2026 to $528 billion in fiscal 2027, a gain of about $50 billion. The Duo ships from late October, so nearly all of its 2026 sales land in fiscal 2027. At 6 million units, that’s about a quarter of the expected growth.
Not all of it is new money, though. Some Duo buyers would have bought an iPhone 18 Pro anyway, and Pu sees 72 million Pro and Pro Max units shipping this year, 12 times his Duo number.
Apple’s November 2 Call Is the First Real Supply Read
Apple reports fiscal fourth-quarter results on Monday, November 2. That quarter includes no Duo sales, so the number that matters is the December-quarter outlook. Supply has capped iPhone sales before: Apple posted a record March quarter this year despite iPhone constraints.
If management says hinges, not buyers, are still the limit, January’s ship date is a factory story as much as a demand one. Until that call, I’d treat today’s sellout as proof the Duo has buyers, not proof of a big Duo quarter.
