If Dawson’s 40% holds, that’s roughly $270 billion riding on one customer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which, yikes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that customer’s revenue just shrank, at least on paper. Steve Eisman, the investor made famous by \u003Cem>The Big Short\u003C\u002Fem>, said this on \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpodcasts.apple.com\u002Fus\u002Fpodcast\u002Fhow-openai-could-cause-a-us-recession-with-steve-eisman\u002Fid1456467014?i=1000796641504\">The Compound and Friends\u003C\u002Fa>:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">“…last week OpenAI came out and said that their annualized revenue at the end of September was 50 billion. A month ago they said 70.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of that gap is bookkeeping. The $50 billion figure, first reported by the [Financial Times](LINK NEEDED), reportedly leaves out the gross revenue from OpenAI’s partners that the higher number counted.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even so, the backlog looks heavy next to it. Roughly $270 billion is more than five years of OpenAI’s revenue at its current run rate. Dawson’s question is how much of OpenAI’s spending depends on raising more money. Eisman says “half of Oracle’s backlog is just OpenAI.” Microsoft has $183 billion a year of operating cash and a AAA rating to absorb a stumble.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft’s core business is still humming, too. Microsoft Cloud revenue hit $59.3 billion in the June quarter, up 27%. Microsoft can handle its OpenAI exposure far better than Oracle can, but at 27x the stock isn’t charging much for it. I’d want the Oct. 28 report to show Azure demand that doesn’t depend on OpenAI before paying up.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, OpenAI expects to reach $70 billion or more of annualized revenue by year-end, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bloomberg.com\u002Fnews\u002Farticles\u002F2026-10-09\u002Fopenai-expects-70-billion-in-annualized-revenue-by-end-of-2026\">according to Bloomberg\u003C\u002Fa>. If it gets there and keeps raising money, that $270 billion looks a lot safer.
